Kris Kristofferson gone the way of the truth

Básaíonn gach éinne! B'shin mar a labhair Dr Gregory House sa chlár telefíse den teideal céanna. Mar an gcéanna d’ealaíntóirí ach go maireann a gcuid ealaíne. Ní bheidh aon péintéail, aisteoireacht, amhránaíocht ná seinnm ar siúl arís acu ach ní éagann an rud a fhágann siad againn.

When Kris Kristofferson died on Sunday I thought of two albums - Me and Bobby McGee and The Silver Tongue Devil and I. I can see them still – beside our not-so-high-end Waltham stereo circa 1974. One is a closeup of the bearded bard. The other is a double exposure of the singer.

Bhí na hamhráin dochreidte mar a bhí na scéalta laistigh díobha. To Beat the Devil – scríofa fé Johnny Cash – a chuimhnigh ar am nuair a bhí Cash ina "a great and wasted friend of mine" ach a canadh nuair ná raibh Cash 'wasted’ a thuilleadh.

Éist le Steve Futterman agus Brian Lally i mbun cur síos ar Kris ar Morning Ireland.

When Cash wanted to sing the Sunday Morning Coming Down line – "Wishing Lord that I was stoned" – the TV network wanted to change the adjective to "home" – Cash stood his ground and brought the song to Number 1. The two would become firm friends and perform with the The Highwaymen – on record and tour.

Ba polymath nó ileolaí a bhí in Kris. Múinteoir, scríbhneoir, píolóta heileacaptar le gradam, scoláire Rhodes ag Oxford, sular thosaigh a ghairm sa gceol, fiú.

His mother disowned him after he left the US army and he wound up in Nashville . He worked as a janitor in the Columbia studio while Bob Dylan recorded Blonde on Blonde - a job that his friend Billy Swan took up later!

B’í Bobby de chuid Bobby McGee rúnaí leis an gceannaire Monument, Fred Foster – mheas Kris go raibh ceol san ainm agus roinn sé an chreidiúint scríbhneoireachta léi mar ionspráid – Kristofferson/Foster atá ar an lipéid fós.

The Highwaymen ar chlár Jay Leno, The Tonight Show.

Kris could write a bar-room song as good as any – up to and including Hank Williams. The Silver Tongue Devil is wonderful and the close encounter of the police kind in Best of all Possible Worlds will have you laughing heartily. His love songs slay me every time. Loving her was Easier is pure poetry and Jodie and the Kid will have you blubbering in a thrice.

Níorbh ann ach 'duine daonna', mar a scríobh sé in 'One Day at a Time' – ceirnín sár-churriarrachta in Éirinn fós. Thós sé droch-chéim nó dhó – dar liom go bhfuil 'They Killed Him' sách lofa ach caithfidh taithí a bheith agat ar an doircheacht le cur amach a bheith agat ar an ngeal, agus tá soilse a shaothar fíor-gheal ar fad. Níl gach amhrán dá chuid ar eolas agam – ní go dtí inniu a chuala mé 'From Here to Forever' agus is léir gur seod láidir déanach atá ann.

Go and get the Essentiall double CD - it’s a great overview. Remember the Janitor Job in 65 – Kris would cross paths with Dylan on a few occasions. They both played in Pat Garret and Billy The Kid, Sam Peckinpah’s western. Three weeks after the papal picture problem, Sinead O’Connor was booed at a Dylan Tribute in the Garden – Kris was the one who comforted her. And he wrote a small but perfectly formed Sister Sinead about the episode.

Ba ghníomhaí é chomh maith, tá seans ann go bhfuil vóta caillte ag na Dems – bhí sé páirteach i bhfeachtas i gcoinne Reagan agus Poblachtánaigh eile. Tá pictiúir agam dó ag síniú síniúcháin dom deirfiúir. Tá t-léine á chaitheamh aige de Bhundúchasach Meiriceánach atá sa charcair leis na ndeich-mblianta ar chúis murdar bhréagach.

Kris agus Sinéad ag canadh Help me Make it Through the Night le chéile.

Kristofferson had a better movie career that many – from A Star is born to Blade but at the end – it’s the songs, and the voice. Everybody dies – to quote Dr House again - but the songs will live in out hearts and minds for generations. For this we thanks that singers and marvel at their words.
