BOOKS: INTERNATIONAL LITERATURE FESTIVAL DUBLIN

MUSIC: CELLISIMO

Galway's international cello celebration features a whopping twenty-seven concerts across Galway city and county, with more than 500 musicians, performers, composers, singers, dancers, actors, storytellers, game designers and speakers from Ireland and across the world taking part. With community celebrations, student-focused events, a film screening, a gaming event with live score, a mystery cello trail on Inishbofin Island, a photography exhibition and a melting pot of Irish trad and classical sounds, highlights include an eclectic programme of classical and contemporary music from the worlds of film and gaming with conductor and composer Eimear Noone and the National Symphony Orchestra - find out more here (May 18-26, various venues, Galway city and county)

EVENT: AFRICA DAY

Africa Day is the annual worldwide celebration of the people, cultures, and potential of the African continent, and this year, all 31 Local Authorities across Ireland will host various cultural, artistic, and family-friendly events. These will include contemporary African-Irish culture, as well as family fun days, fashion, art, film, music, dance, and food events, which will take place in towns and cities across Ireland. Last year's Africa Day bash on the grounds of IMMA (the Irish Museum of Modern Art) saw over 6,000 people attend a day of African music, dance, art and culture - it returns this year for a free, fun-filled family event at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham (RHK) on Sunday, May 19th - find an event near you here.

FILM: EAT / SLEEP / CHEER / REPEAT

Forget pom-poms and girls on the sidelines... it takes strength, sweat and sparkle to be a world-class cheerleader. This feel-good documentary from director Tanya Doyle follows the young female - and male - athletes of Team Ireland, exploring questions of gender, strength, performance, sexuality and what it's like growing up in the world today. Can Team Ireland reach their goal of top ten in the world, and can cheerleading give these athletes a space to find themselves? It's a wild journey worth taking... and then there are those cheerleading sequences! (Select cinemas nationwide)

EVENT: FASTNET FILM FESTIVAL

From May 22nd to 26th, Schull in West Cork plays host to in excess of 170 (!) short films and 19 feature length films, all screened in a village without a cinema! There will be 11 screening venues throughout the village (and also on Cape Clear), plus seminars, masterclasses and pop-up events a go-go. And there are the guests, not least a potential Normal People reunion as actors Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones and director Lenny Abrahamson are all due to make an appearance, while a special focus on horror will see filmmaker Lee Cronin introduce a screening of his gory smash Evil Dead Rise, and a screening of silent cinema classic Nosferatu with a new score from West Cork composers Irene and Linda Buckley - find out more here (May 22nd to 26th, various venues, Schull, Co.
