Funding of €6 million is being provided to deliver artist workspaces across the country.

The shortage of suitable workspaces and studios has been an on-going issue facing artists and community groups.

Minster for Arts Catherine Martin announced the funding, which will be made available to local authorities in a new pilot scheme to support the development of appropriate spaces in existing vacant buildings.

Research conducted by her department over the last number of years shows that demand for artists' workspaces far outweighs supply and there is a widespread shortage of creative spaces.

Capital grants up to a maximum of €300,000 will be made available to many of the densely populated areas including Cork City Council and Dún Laoghaire Rathdown, while grants of up to €150,000 will be available to remaining local authorities.

It comes as artists are organising a demonstration in Dublin to highlight their frustrations at what they say are ongoing shortages of creative spaces in their area.

These artists say that more needs to be done to support their work, and they are calling for additional help from large scale developers, who they say are changing the inner-city infrastructure.

They are also calling on Dublin City Council and the Government to provide additional supports.
