It wasn't to be for Andrew Scott as the Dubliner lost out to Baby Reindeer's Richard Gadd at Sunday night's Emmys.

Both were nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie category, but Gadd ultimately won, adding this award to the one he received earlier for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Baby Reindeer was also named Outstanding Drama Series and Gadd's co-star Jessica Gunning won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award.

Hollywood stars descended on the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles for the second time this year to celebrate the best in television, after the September 2023 ceremony was delayed following the US writers' and actors’ strikes.

In their opening monologue, father and son hosting duo Eugene and Dan Levy made jokes about The Bear featuring in the comedy category following the reaction that it should be categorised as a drama.

The first award of the night went to The Bear star Ebon Moss-Bachrach for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Colin Farrell was on award-presenting duty at the Emmys

There was a good sprinkling of Irish acting talent at the Emmys, even though Scott was the only one to get a nomination.

Scott was one of the first celebrities on the red carpet and the Dubliner sported a black tailored suit and a moustache.

Saoirse Ronan and Jack Lowden

Fellow moustache-wearer Colin Farrell presented the second award on the night, as the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series went to Billy Crudup in The Morning Show.

Meanwhile, newlyweds Saoirse Ronan and Jack Lowden made their red carpet debut as a married couple at the Emmy Awards.

Lowden was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his starring role in Slow Horses, but lost out to Crudup.

Nicola Coughlan at the Emmys

Galway's Nicola Coughlan graced the Emmys red carpet for the first time and turned heads in a shimmering metallic silver sequin dress.

While wasn't nominated for an award this year - season three of Bridgerton didn't qualify for the 2024 Emmys - she took part as a co-presenter with Baby Reindeer star Nava Mau at the star-studded ceremony.

The pair presented the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie award, which was won by Lamorne Morris for his role in Fargo.

Watch: Irish stars Saoirse Ronan, Andrew Scott and Nicola Coughlan wowed on the red carpet in downtown Los Angeles to celebrate the best of television at the annual Emmy Awards.
