What's on? Top 10 TV and streaming tips for Monday

There's the self-explanatory Extraordinary Life: The Ben Dunne Story, Borders and Lies explores racism and xenophobia in Ireland, Upfront with Katie Hannon returns and The Penguin moves to a Monday night slot . . .

Pick of the Day

This documentary tells the truly singular story of Ben Dunne, the larger-than-life businessman who always bounced back from controversy.

At 34, he took over from his father Ben Senior as head of Dunnes Stores and within ten years annual turn-over soared to £850 million with 90+ stores in Ireland and overseas.

Ben built on the low-cost model established by his father and pushed Dunnes' suppliers for even lower prices. He found a baker willing to supply loaves of bread for 19p so he could sell them at 29p, well below the 55p that branded products cost. This was the start of the bread wars that led to a crisis for the Government of the day.

The family fortune made Ben Junior a target for an IRA kidnap gang in 1981. Extraordinary archive captures the desperate search for Ben and the numerous attempts by the Dunne family to pay a ransom which were all blocked by Gardai.

Then there was his infamous antics with call-girls and cocaine during a trip to Florida in 1992. It had a domino effect that no-one could have predicted. Ben’s lavish lifestyle was now on view and in the full glare of publicity.

There’s all that – and a lot more – in what should be a hugely entertaining documentary.

New or Returning Shows

Borders and Lies, 9.00pm, Virgin Media One

This two-part series explores how social media platforms have become battlegrounds for spreading misinformation, fuelling polarisation, and shaping public opinion.

Real-life stories and expert analysis lead us through the challenges of mediating an online world increasingly dominated by a far-right narrative.

Part one explores who the far right are and where they came from. Cameras go to Drogheda to see what happened when the D-Hotel was suddenly closed and then reopened as an IPAS centre.

The documentary also looks at what the term "unvetted" actually means and dissects the "Great Replacement".

Then it’s to Roscrea to meet residents who were devastated when their one hotel, Racket Hall was closed to house asylum seekers.

Part two will be broadcast tomorrow at 9pm on Virgin Media One.

Here’s the return of the current affairs magazine programme hosted by the journalist and broadcaster Katie Hannon, who chairs debates where members of the public face people whose decisions impact on their lives.

How to Survive a Dictator: North Korea, 10.00pm, Channel 4

Munya Chawawa surveys life under Kim Jong-Un (below), supreme leader of North Korea since December 2011.

His journey takes him to Switzerland, Seoul and suburban West London as he tracks down everyone from a former school friend of Kim Jong-Un, to those who have seen the effects of Kim's regime at first hand.

With a mix of interviews, history, and the comedian's trademark sketches, he seeks to reveal the truth about one of the world's most notorious regimes and leaders.

He also aims to bust some myths that surround North Korea.

The Big Cases, 7.00pm, BBC Two

Nicholas Rossi is a US fugitive who came to the UK with a new identity after faking his own death.

He claims he is called Arthur Knight and is a victim of mistaken identity, but a sheriff in Scotland is sending him back to Utah to face rape charges.

The programme speaks to the people who knew him in his previous life in America and chart his story from there to his discovery by police in a hospital bed in Glasgow.

Don’t Miss

The Penguin, 9.00pm, Sky Atlantic

Streaming on NOW

Bit of an odd one this, as the debut episode of this Batman-related drama landed last Friday week.

Let’s hope the wait is worth it.

Starring Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb (aka The Penguin), the eight-episode DC Studios drama series continues the epic crime saga that filmmaker Matt Reeves began with The Batman reboot.

There’s no Batman, but what you get here is the story of the titular gangster as he attempts to become the kingpin of Gotham City’s underworld.

New episodes weekly from today.

Snowpiercer, 9.30pm, TG4

Bong Joon-ho's fantasy thriller, starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell and Octavia Spencer, is a cracking film.

In a snow-ravaged world, a group of travellers fight for survival on a train that perpetually circumnavigates the globe.

The vehicle's occupants are divided into a military ruling elite and their dishevelled captives.

But now, 17 years after the train set out on its seemingly never-ending journey, the downtrodden, abused captives have had enough. A rail revolution is brewing.

New to Stream

Deadpool and Wolverine, Sky Store

The sum of this movie's parts was the placing of Deadpool in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

That's achieved, but along the way there are plenty of puerile laughs with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the two superheroes.

As we meet Deadpool’s alter ego Wade Wilson again, he toils away in civilian life. His days as the morally flexible mercenary are seemingly behind him.

But when his home world faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit up again with an even more reluctantW olverine, the fun – and action – begins in earnest.

Ending Today

Nightsleeper, 9.00pm, BBC One

The real-time thriller, starring Joe Cole, Alexandra Roach, David Threlfall and Sharon Small, comes to a conclusion.

Abby is convinced she knows how to stop the remaining carriages, but with Joe out of contact and almost out of time, is it too late for those hurtling towards the end of the line?

Sport

Shelbourne host St Patrick's Athletic (KO 7.15pm) in yet another key Premier Division match at Tolka Park as the season enters the final few weeks.

Shelbourne boss Damien Duff

Shelbourne are looking to close in on their first top-flight title since 2006, while the Saints have endured a disappointing campaign – but are making a late bid for a European spot.

With commentary from Des Curran.
