One of Ireland's leading piano players, Ruth has won many accolades including the piano final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year award.

She released her debut solo album Reconnection in 2016 and her most recent album, Aura, a collaboration with Belfast composer Neil Martin, is a classical reimagining of Irish airs.

In recent years, Ruth has performed as soloist at the Southbank Centre, London in the Queen Elizabeth Hall and at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I’m a total introvert and get immense comfort from silence and rainy days. I’m a classically trained pianist but would have loved to have been a cellist (or jazz pianist). I’ve been diagnosed with both ASD and ADHD in my 40s which has been a fascinating and healing self-discovery.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe how I connect to music as a human experience and way of self-expression. I search for the space between the notes, the breath, the emotion and truth through the music.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I have a wide range of inspirations including Martha Argerich, Hania Rani, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Little Simz and Kae Tempest. I love discovering new authentic artists.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

My first arena gig was to see Muse with my son.

What was the first record you ever bought?

More than Words by American rock band Extreme.

What’s your favourite song right now?

To Build a Home by The Cinematic Orchestra featuring Patrick Watson.

Favourite lyric of all time?

'So many things I would’ve done, but clouds get in my way’ from Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

A Song For You written by Leon Russell and sung by Donny Hathaway.

Where can people find your music/more information?

You can hear me play as part of the Perspectives series at the National Concert Hall on 2 May. @ruthmcginleypianist on Instagram, X and Facebook and info on my website.
