Behind the music - Cian Thomas

admin admin | 10-30 16:15

Longford singer Cian Thomas has released his new single, Diamond. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

In the past year, Cian has played gigs around Europe and America, a sold-out headline show in his hometown of Drumlish, supported The Academic, The Blizzards, Gavin James and Damien Dempsey, and performed at Electric Picnic.

Diamond is the follow-up to Cian's debut single Mandy, and speaking about the new track, he says, "I grew up listening to Elvis Presley and Sam Cooke and that way of singing always stuck with me.

"I always loved the simplicity of the music and the smooth, soulful vocals telling a story. I wanted to combine that style of music with the other big influence on my identity which is rock music.

"Somewhere in the process I discovered a sound that is unique to me and captures exactly what I want to be as an artist."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I have a day job as a barber, music, clothes and travel are my holy trinity and I once played a gig to a room full of horses.

How would you describe your music?

Nostalgic but fresh.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Elvis, The Stones, Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Hutchence are a few of the big ones.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

My dad took me to see The Blizzards in Mullingar sometime in the mid-2000s. I was too young to be there but he snuck me in under his coat or something. That was my first time seeing a band on stage and electric guitars and all that. I remember it vividly.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Bullet in a Bible, Green Day’s live album from the American Idiot tour. I was about six, I saved up my pocket money and bought it in Heartbeat City, the old record shop. That album changed my life. It still blows my mind every time I listen to it, which is a lot.

What’s your favourite song right now?

There’s a tune called Lekkerboy by Sticky Fingers that I really love. I saw them live last year and it might have been the best gig I’ve ever been to. I’ve had that song on repeat since then.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs, and what’s wrong with that?" – Paul McCartney.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Something by the Bee Gees, maybe You Win Again.

Where can people find your music/more information?

I’m on all the usual social media @cianthomasmusic and Spotify under the same name.
