Ryan Gosling is still afraid of heights - even after making The Fall Guy

In cinemas from Thursday, The Fall Guy sees stuntman Colt Seavers (Gosling) tasked with finding wayward A-lister Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) for director Jody Moreno (Blunt) - Seavers's former love interest.

The film is directed by David Leitch, a legendary stuntman who has already stepped behind the lens to direct John Wick, Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Bullet Train.

David Leitch and Ryan Gosling on the set of The Fall Guy

The Fall Guy opens with Gosling himself doing a winch scene from the top of a building - a stunt that Leitch insisted his leading man perform.

"It's very high, it turns out! Heights are high!" Gosling continued.

"But it was so important to do it and I love that sequence so much. It's one of my favourites that I've ever done because it so clearly distills the difference between what a stunt person does and what everyone else does on a set.

"He's just one of the crew moving his way through, talking to everyone, just another day at the office. Except his job's a little different: he goes up 12 storeys and gets dropped off the building!"

The Fall Guy is in cinemas from Thursday 2 May

Although numerous TV shows have fared poorly in jumping to cinemas, Gosling did not see The Fall Guy as a risk.

"Having one of the best stunt guys there is also be one of the best directors working, manning the helm of this, it felt to me like you couldn't ask for a better partner," he said of Leitch.

"A lot of times when you're making a film, you're struggling to understand the world [of the film], but he understands it so deeply and it's like making it with his friends who are from that world.

"I felt confident that it would be authentic and entertaining as well because he's so conscious as well of the audience. He just really makes it for them."

The Fall Guy is in cinemas from Thursday 2 May.
