Peter Andre has revealed how he met his wife Emily after her surgeon father operated on him after the singer was rushed to hospital with a kidney problem.

The Australian star, who is best known for his nineties hit Mysterious Girl, married Dr Emily McDonagh in 2015 and the couple welcomed a new baby daughter just four weeks ago.

They already have three children and both regularly appear on ITV's Lorraine.

They first met in 2010 after Andre was rushed to hospital in excruciating pain just before he was due to play a gig in Plymouth in the UK.

He had kidney stones and was treated by Emily's father, consultant urologist Ruaraidh McDonagh, whose family originally came from Donegal.

"I collapsed from this kidney problem and Emily's dad operated on me, we became friends for two years, I met the family, we were all friends for years.

"I remember my kids, Princess and Junior, meeting Emily when they were five and three - and we were all friends for two or three years and then one day I thought, `oh oh . . . I’m starting to get feelings for Emily. What am I going do here . . . ?’"

He added, "I thought if her father finds out he’s going to wish he did a different operation so I went and asked him. I said, `look before I say anything to Emily, I’m really sorry but I’ve got feeling for her. Are you OK with me asking her on a date?’"

"He laughed and he said to me he kinda felt there was a chemistry going on. He was great about it - and he remains one of my best friends. We’re together all the time."

Andre plays The Biggest Disco Ever on 22 June at the Marquee in Cork along with East 17, Haddaway and Bass Hunter, and asked if he ever gets tired of his feelgood hit Mysterious Girl, he said, "I went through a stage - as people do when they’re in this industry - that can take it all a bit serious at times.

"I think in the early days you want to be the best you can and be No 1 and look for the next song.

"I remember releasing Flavour, which was after Mysterious Girl, and I was determined to just perform Flavour everywhere and one day I went and saw a Prince concert and he didn’t do any of the songs that we loved and I was devastated.

"I couldn’t wait to leave and I love Prince. I thought `what are doing?’ If you’re even known for one verse of a song, you sing it to the end. What a joy to be able to have a song that people can sing?"
