Behind the music - KÎND

admin admin | 05-05 16:15

Irish five-piece melodic prog rock band KÎND have released their latest single, Philosopher's Wish. We asked front man Matt Redmond the BIG questions . . .

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Hello! My name is Matt Redmond and I'm the band leader and songwriter of KÎND. I am quite an introverted person so I'm usually happiest when on my own, writing, producing music or video editing. I am obsessed with The Blindboy Podcast and quote it daily to the annoyance of my girlfriend.

How would you describe your music?

Atmospheric, melodic prog rock.

Who are your musical inspirations?

I love a lot of the big prog rock acts such as Porcupine Tree, Haken and Plini but I think my biggest inspirations for KÎND came from seeing live Irish acts. In particular, Síomha, Bicurious, Sky Atlas, and the now disbanded Synk. Seeing these Irish artists playing their own music had a big impact on me and motivated me to do the same.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Ryan Sheridan in the Olympia with Gavin James at the start of his career supporting. Ryan's guitar playing was so massive and The Olympia has since become my favourite venue in Dublin.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I believe it was If You Want Blood You've Got It by AC/DC. My uncle showed me the track Whole Lotta Rosie and I had to go out and get the album with that track on it. Unbeknownst to me it turned out to be live album and holy moly it blew my little eight-year-old mind. That album and AC/DC are the biggest reason for me becoming a guitar player.

What's your favourite song right now?

I recently discovered a band called Wilt and their song Moved Along has been on constant rotation recently. Anyone into heavy rock with nice chords and amazing vocals check these guys out!

Favourite lyric of all time?

I think it would have to be the Jeff Buckley lyric "It's never over. She's the tear that hangs inside my soul forever" from Lover You Should've Come Over.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I think I'd have to go with The Watchmaker by Steven Wilson. It has some soft parts, some heavy parts, a guitar solo, flute solo, sax solo, amazing vocal arrangements and multiple different sections each warranting a song of their own. Sitting at almost 12 minutes long I feel like it would take me a while to get sick of it!

Where can people find your music/more information?

Our socials are @kindband on Instagram and @kindistheband on everything else! Our latest single Philosopher's Wish can be found on all major streaming platforms.
