Dublin indie band Speakers have released their new single, Cooler Talk. We asked them the BIG questions . . .
Speaking about their new track, the band say, "Cooler Talk explores the existential dread of working terrible jobs in your 20s with no end in sight to the daily grind."

Formed in 2020, Speakers are Conor Kinsella (vocals, guitar), Alex Cregan (vocals, bass), Ellen Beamish (guitar) and Joe Clarke (drums).
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
Conor: We argued in our band group chat quite a bit over who should answer this. Here are three things I have decided to share with you to give you a bit of an idea of who we are.
We started this band in January of 2020. The poor timing of starting a band right before a pandemic is not lost on us, but that being said, we figured if we could somehow stay safe and stick together through that, we could survive anything.
We didn't play our first gig until April of 2022, which was at the UCD Battle of the Bands. So many things went wrong with our first performance including my pedalboard completely freaking out mid-set, but we somehow managed to win.
We have a policy of no self-deprecation allowed in the band. That being said, we all absolutely tear each other to shreds to make up for it.
How would you describe your music?
Conor: We brand ourselves on social media as being a 'slightly emo but smiley’ rock band. The music is kind of a melting pot of indie, pop, punk and alternative rock from the 90s and 2000s but, at the risk of sounding cliche, we try not to get too hung up on situating ourselves genre-wise. It’s, for the most part, guitar-oriented with fun riffs, energetic drums and lots of vocal hooks.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Blink 182, My Chemical Romance, The Strokes, Paramore (to name but a few!).
What was the first gig you ever went to?
Alex: I'm pretty sure Longitude 2015 was my first gig/festival, Kendrick Lamar headlining. It rained but it was cool! I was 15 and was supposed to call my mum to pick me up but the rain messed with the phone screen so I couldn't call, ended up running home.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Joe: The new St. Vincent single Broken Man has been on loop constantly in the past little while - it’s just got such a fantastic energy, and with the buildup over the course of the song I find it impossible to sit or stand still for the length of the whole track.
Favourite lyric of all time?
Ellen: "Why do I feel so strange? A nuclear family and friends my own age I follow the rules, do what it says on the tin But I'm still on the outside still looking in" - Visions Of A Life by Wolf Alice.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Joe: Honestly most of the songs off Foo Fighters’ second album would fit here just fine - if I had to pick one, it’d be My Hero.
Where can people find your music/more information?
You can keep up to date with us on Instagram and TikTok as @speakersband. We’re occasionally funny on there, but more importantly you can hear about all of our upcoming shows as well as find links to our music on those platforms. We released our latest single Cooler Talk recently and you can find it on Spotify, Apple Music and all of the other usual streaming services.
