Bambie Thug represents Ireland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024, Doctor Who returns with a double episode (and The Beatles!), Stephen Mulhern is In for a Penny, and there's Ealing classic The Lavender Hill Mob . . .

Pick of the Day

Live coverage of the 68th annual song competition from the Malmö Arena, Sweden, where Bambie Thug represents Ireland with the self-penned song Doomsday Blue.

As ever, the wonderful Marty Whelan (below) is on commentary duty.

Mad to think that Ireland used to win this contest with ease, and now people are in awe of a place in the final. Hopefully Bambie has a ball and gets a high ranking, if not a win.

It’s a repeat of the concert featuring former Irish Eurovision entrants Johnny Logan, Linda Martin, Niamh Kavanagh, Paul Harrington, Charlie McGettigan and Eimear Quinn.

Then at 7.05pm The Doctor and Ruby meet the Beatles during a trip back to the 1960s but discover that the all-powerful Maestro is hatching a plot to change history, with the Fab Four in the thick of it.

Don’t Miss

In for a Penny, 6.30pm, UTV

There’s a serious lack of standard Saturday evening shows today, but this should satisfy.

Stephen Mulhern (above) hosts the game show in which he travels around the UK setting members of the public unusual challenges, featuring Check It Out and a very silly Hair or No Hair.

Plus, there’s the launch of new mini-game show Romance or Showmance and In for a Penny, In for a Grand sees someone win £1,000.

Screen One, 10.40pm, BBC Four

Another chance to see Hancock, by William Humble, first broadcast in 1991.

It's a drama detailing the last eight years of comedy actor Tony Hancock's life, encompassing the airing of the most famous of his Hancock's Half-Hour episodes, The Blood Donor, and leading to his untimely death in June 1968.

It is argued that his refusal to accept the limitations of his own genius destroyed his two marriages and led to the 44-year-old's suicide in a Sydney flat.

It stars Alfred Molina (above) and Frances Barber.

New to Stream

The Blackening, Sky Cinema & NOW

Antionette Roberston, Dewayne Perkins, Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg and X Mayo star in this comedy horror.

The story centres on a group of Black friends who reunite for a Juneteenth weekend getaway only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer.

Forced to play by his rules, the friends soon realise this ain't no game.

Saturday Cinema

The Lavender Hill Mob, 1.00pm, BBC Two

Here’s a classic Ealing comedy, starring Alec Guinness and Stanley Holloway (below), Sid James and a rather young Audrey Hepburn.

An unassuming bank worker masterminds a plot to steal £1million in gold bullion, then melts it down and turns it into statues of the Eiffel Tower that can easily be exported.

But the plan soon goes south, with hilarious results.

Mr Holmes, 8.00pm, BBC Two

Period mystery from 2015 based on Mitch Cullin's novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, starring Ian McKellen, Laura Linney and Milo Parker.

An elderly Sherlock Holmes retires to a seaside farmhouse in the aftermath of the Second World War and struggles to cope with his diminished faculties.

Assisted by his housekeeper's inquisitive son, he tries to piece together the events of the one case that he failed to solve.

Here’s a superb, if utterly devastating, Ken Loach drama, starring Kris Hitchen, Debbie Honeywood and Rhys Mcgowan.

It shows how miserable working in the gig economy can be, as well as being detrimental to domestic life.

Hoping that so-called 'self-employment’ through the gig economy can solve their financial woes, a hard-up delivery driver and his wife end up trapped in a vicious circle while struggling to raise a family.
