Daria caught national attention in her homeland on the music competition show, The Voice of Romania in 2018.

Currently based in the UK, the singer-songwriter began her songwriting journey in 2020, before taking up guitar and attending London Music School.

Speaking about her new track, she sats, "From the intimacy of a warm summer evening to an ultimately withered September, Before It Gets Dark details the intricate journey of coming to terms with heartbreak, encapsulating feelings of hopefulness, longing, and despair, all the way to acceptance.

"It evokes the universal truth that humans chase fleeting dreams, even though these can leave us in the dark if they don't reach fulfilment.

"This song was my companion in my own journey of healing and growth, and I can only hope it will do the same for anyone in need, as I believe it is through accepting vulnerability and becoming more in touch with our feelings that we gain strength."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I’m a Cambridge-based pop/soul artist, originally from Romania - I’ve been a local since September 2023 and I had the opportunity to play exciting events, recently organising an open jam to empower female musicians in Cambridgeshire, as part of a collective I co-founded named Beats & Babes. The support and honesty of the music scene here has been and still is a wonder to me. My new single Before It Gets Dark is out now on all streaming platforms, and hopefully if you give it a listen, it will offer you a glimpse into who I am. And I have a cat named Toulouse (like Toulouse from The Aristocats), who is turning eight this year and who I miss dearly because he’s back home in Romania.

How would you describe your music?

I think powerful yet delicate is a contrast that describes my sound best, my music being a combination of pop, soul and folk elements. Performing vocals gently but with extreme emotion, featuring dreamy guitars, soulful piano and adding layers of harmonies to enhance the message of my songs underpins my artistic vision: to create a tranquil and reflective space for listeners, and encourage them to ponder over their own feelings and vulnerabilities, in order to heal (if they ever feel the need for it). And I think this is reflected really well in my latest single, as I previously mentioned, Before It Gets Dark.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Growing up I listened to a lot of soul. I remember Etta James being my favourite, I used to cover At Last, All I Could Do Was Cry and Something’s Got a Hold on Me on the shows and contests I was involved in, which strengthened my passion for powerhouse female singers like Christina Aguilera or Beyonce. As for now, my biggest music influence is Yebba. Evergreen, October Sky or her rendition of John Mayer’s Age of Worry are songs I include whenever I perform live - it’s not every day you find tunes that can take you through so many different emotions. Her incredible vocal ability and unique way of pouring her soul into a song is something that deeply inspires me as an artist.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

I really took my time trying to recall who it is I saw live for the first time - and I think I found my answer. I grew up in the South of Romania, in a town not too far from the capital city Bucharest. When I was eight, I remember my parents asking me to get ready because someone really famous was going to have a big concert in my hometown. And that someone was Michael Bolton, who casually turned up in one of the biggest parks in the city and gave a full-on concert for an hour or so. I was so young I didn’t really grasp what was happening, but I think that is when I discovered the thrill of live performance, and the beauty of going to a concert and connecting with other people through the shared language of music.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I remember my dad owning a Janis Joplin album that fascinated me as a kid - it captured some of her greatest hits which I learned to appreciate from a young age. However, an album that truly speaks to me is Joni Mitchell’s Blue. Her music has an unparalleled cinematic quality, and this is an album I will always return to.

What’s your favourite song right now?

With Jacob Collier’s Djesse Vol. 4 being recently out, I’ve been revisiting his music and Little Blue featuring the wonderful Brandi Carlile has been on repeat. Such a comforting, warm melody.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Joni Mitchell’s Come In From The Cold is filled with imagery so powerful, vivid and vulnerable, adding new layers of meaning with each listen. "I feel your leg under the table, Leaning into mine, I feel renewed, I feel disabled, By these bonfires in my spine". Her music will always be a wonder to me.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Hard to choose, given I’ve expressed my passion for so many artists, but I’d probably have to go with Yebba’s Evergreen, especially her live version at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in New York City. I could not imagine not being able to listen to its steady bassline, incredible acoustics and Yebba’s powerful transitions. This tune found its way to my heart and never left.
