A documentary film about Former President of Ireland Mary Robinson is to be released in cinemas this August, telling her story "in her own words, for the very first time".

Mrs Robinson will be released in cinemas across Ireland on Friday, 23 August.

The trailer was released on Tuesday to mark her 80th birthday.

The Chair of the Elders said it was "fantastic to work with director Aoife Kelleher and the entire film-making team" on the documentary.

She said the film is dedicated to her late special adviser Bride Rosney, who had persuaded her to make the documentary.

"I hope it will inspire many young people, and women in particular, to reach their full potential," Mrs Robinson added.

The film includes a song recorded by Bono and Irish singer-songwriter Gemma Doherty (Saint Sister), Women of the World, on the soundtrack.

The documentary is backed by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland.
