Pick of the Day

Insomnia, Paramount+

Former Line of Duty star Vicky McClure heads the cast of this new thriller series by Sarah Pinborough, adapted from her 2022 novel of the same name.

McClure plays Emma Averill, a mother approaching her 40th birthday must investigate her past as she develops insomnia.

Her life has been disrupted by the arrival of her irresponsible sister Phoebe and is stressed out working as a custody lawyer. And there’s a buried childhood trauma that begins to resurface.

No wonder she can’t sleep!

New or Returning Shows

This show first appeared on Disney+ but if you haven’t seen it, do yourself a favour and tune in here.

Jesse Eisenberg and Claire Danes star in this hugely addictive and quite stunning tale of a middle-class Manhattan woman who vanishes, leaving her ex confused and caring for their kids.

At first you might dislike the characters - they can be very annoying and self-obsessed - but this show becomes compulsive as it reveals a story about ageing and coming to terms with life in your forties.

Eisenberg plays Toby Fleishman, who is divorced from his beloved but increasingly ambitious and difficult wife Rachel (Danes) after 15 years of marriage and two children.

The narrator of the show is Toby's college pal, Libby Epstein (Lizzy Caplan), married with two kids herself and living the seemingly undemanding – maybe unfulfilling - life of a suburban housewife.

And while Eisenberg and Danes are as good as ever, Caplan puts in a magnetic performance.

Don’t Miss

Taskmaster, 9.00pm, Channel 4

It’s the penultimate episode and loyal assistant Little Alex Horne risks raising notoriously prickly Taskmaster Greg Davies' hackles with a task in celebration of himself.

Sophie Willan is baffled by mirror writing, John Robins proves to be a talented tailor, Steve Pemberton has an expletive-laden row with a bin, Joanne McNally finds a novel use for a cow's ear and Nick Mohammed brings a tear to Greg's eye.

Illusions for Sale: The Rise and Fall of Generation Zoe, Netflix

This Argentinian documentary film looks interesting.

In a world where the pandemic has wreaked havoc, a world steeped in frustration and uncertainty, a man comes along to shake up the markets - and people's consciousness.

He comes with an initiative that encompasses education, the financial sphere, and spiritual development.

Illusions for Sale: The Rise and Fall of Generation Zoe depicts the genesis, the growth, and the collapse of Latin America's most bizarre and ambitious financial platform, itself an accurate portrait of its eccentric creator, Leonardo Cositorto.
