Berlin electronic artist Emileo has released her new EP, A Thief of Mother's Milk. We asked her the BIG questions . . .
Now Dublin-based, Emileo blends Eastern and Western sounds in her music and she is currently completing her BA Commercial Modern Music Scholarship from BIMM Dublin.
She has supported artists such as Tori Amos, Joesef, Mundy and Tolü Makay around Ireland and played in Dublin's Olympia Theatre and Vicar Street, Galway’s Róisín Dubh and Cork’s Opera House.
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I love the sea, I go skinny swimming once a week. My grandma is my best friend and since my sweet grandpa died, we always sleep in his pyjamas when I visit her. One thing that I am always (ALWAYS) craving are pickles.
How would you describe your music?
It’s definitely electronic. Apart from that it carries the warmth of the red streets in Marrakesh that burn under a pomegranate sun; a little glass of pickled lemons filled with longing and nostalgia. Shaped by shadowy backyards in Berlin summers, it merges melodic techno with tribal sounds and the exotic colours of the far East where the sun rises first. Flamenco and Arabic music touch me in a very magical way, and I find it heart-warming to learn to understand and feel new cultures that I can then incorporate into my music.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Rosalía, The Blaze, Aurora, Björk, London Grammar, RY X, Kiasmos, Sinéad O’Connor. I admire artists who think music bigger than just on a sonic level, when there is a concept and visuals, a statement behind the music. When music becomes a metacultural synthesis of arts.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
I think it was funnily enough U2 when they played at the Brandenburg Gate back home in Berlin. I went with my dad and remember getting upset because I thought he was flirting with the woman beside us, five-year old me was pretty jealous, man.
What was the first record you ever bought?
The first time I remember consciously perceiving music as its own entity was when I heard Amy MacDonald’s This is the Life on the radio. She is a Scottish singer-songwriter who does cozy bedroom rock. Now I don’t listen to her anymore but when I was six that woman had me crazy. I took my little sister with me and headed to Media Markt with my pocket money to buy us her debut album.
What’s your favourite song right now?
This is an easy one: Golden Hour On The SS195 by Pier, he is one of my favourite Irish artists at the moment. This song makes me feel something beyond deliverance, as if I was about to sink back into my Mama’s belly into a timelessly peaceful sadness in deep orange where nothing matters anymore.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"Wir schmeißen die letzte heiße Champagner Party im Land, Orgien am Pool, Handstand am Beckenrand" I much prefer the German original but translated it means something like: 'We throw the last hot champagne party in the country, orgies by the pool, handstand on the edge’. The song describes the last day before the end of the world. It is an ode to being alive in exuberance and cherishes imminently ending fellowship and ephemerality. Peter Fox is an absolute Berlin classic, and every proper Berliner knows his lyrics by heart.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

There is nothing more freeing and respectful than the welcoming and accepting darkness of techno. Nowhere else can I let myself go and dream myself away as much as to the hypnotic heartbeat of techno. As if my sweet Berlin was cradling me into peace in its arms. Techno means home to me and listening to this song for the rest of my life would mean to always carry a piece of my home in my heart with me.
Where can people find your music/more information?
I have a website and you can find me on Instagram, Spotify, YouTube, Breaking Tunes, Apple Music, Amazon Music and so on. Or you can contact me directly with emileomusic@gmail.com. I appreciate everyone who takes a minute to find out whether you like my music, if not that’s totally fine, haha. But if you end up liking it, that’s a win-win situation right there:)
