Academy Award-winner Robert De Niro has called Donald Trump "a monster" and said "there is nothing human" about the Republican presidential candidate who is currently on trial over a hush-money payment to an adult film star.

"I always say that I wouldn't play Trump because there's nothing about him that... I don't see anything about him that is... redeemable," De Niro said at an event to promote this year's Tribeca Film Festival.

"There's nothing human about him that I see. And I have no interest (in playing him). He's a monster as far as I'm concerned."

De Niro is a longtime Democrat who recently voiced an ad for Democratic President Joe Biden.

His latest remarks come after he spoke outside the New York court where Trump is standing trial, branding him a dangerous "clown" who will become a dictator for life if reelected.

Robert De Niro called Trump a "clown" outside a New York courthouse on Tuesday

"When Trump ran in 2016, it was like a joke," De Niro told reporters, calling the former president a "clown" and a "tyrant".

"We have a second chance, and no one is laughing now. This is the time to stop him."

Cofounded by De Niro and director Jane Rosenthal, the Tribeca Film Festival will run from 5 - 16 June in De Niro - and Trump's - native New York.

This year, the festival will host a De Niro Con from 14 - 16 June to celebrate the 80-year-old with special screenings, live music and activities.

Festival organisers say several celebrities including Quentin Tarantino, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Walken and Martin Scorsese will make special appearances throughout.
