Normal People stars Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones have said they're "incredibly sorry" that they are not announcing a second series of their hit show, but revealed that they are reuniting for a very good cause.

On Wednesday, the pair sent the rumour mill into overdrive when Edgar-Jones shared a selfie of them on her Instagram story and wrote: "We've got some news to share!! Watch this space."

They have since posted a video to her Instagram story explaining that they are reuniting for a special marathon screening of Normal People in London in support of Pieta and UNICEF.

Irish star Mescal opened the clip by saying: "Hello, The news is, and we are incredibly sorry if we led people on, it's not a season two."

Edgar-Jones interjected: "Not yet! There's still time; keep the faith!", while Mescal added: "Please God. But it is something that we think is very important."

She continued: "We are hosting a charity raffle for the chance to win tickets to see a marathon screening of all 12 episodes of Normal People on the big screen in a central London cinema on the 16th of June."

Mescal said: "We are going to be there, lots of our friends from the show are going to be there, and creatives who helped build the show also."

Edgar-Jones said the proceeds would go towards the "amazing charity Pieta, who are a charity that help families and individuals affected by suicide, suicidal ideation and self-harm, much like the characters in our show.

"Also, a portion of the proceeds are going to go towards UNICEF who are doing amazing work helping aid children globally who are displaced by conflict."

Mescal concluded: "But seriously, we are incredibly grateful for your support in advance. We're really proud to be involved with these charities, and we're incredibly proud of the show. So the more of you that are there, the merrier."

The pair shot to fame as lovers Connell Waldron and Marianne Sheridan in the hit series based on the novel of the same name by Irish author Sally Rooney.

The series was a huge hit during the coronavirus lockdown and turned the duo into global stars.

Mescal has since starred in romantic drama All Of Us Strangers, opposite Andrew Scott, and was nominated for an Oscar for father-daughter drama Aftersun.

He will soon be seen in the epic Gladiator II, the sequel to Ridley Scott's film starring Russell Crowe.

Edgar-Jones has appeared in the big-screen adaptation of hit book Where The Crawdads Sing and will appear in upcoming summer blockbuster Twisters, a sequel to the 1996 Twister.
