What's on? Top 10 TV and streaming tips for Saturday

John Byrne John Byrne | 06-01 16:15

There's a Bon Jovi night on BBC Two, it’s Real Madrid v Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final, Michael B Jordan stars in legal drama Just Mercy, and there’s a matinee treat with Judy Garland . . .

Pick of the Day

Bon Jovi at the BBC, 8.30pm, BBC Two

A night dedicated to New Jersey rockers Bon Jovi begins with this compilation of the band's greatest BBC performances to mark their 40 years in the business.

They range from early 1980s appearances on Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test, to intimate sessions for Radio 2 and clips of their stadium-filling tours.

At 9.30pm there’s Jon Bon Jovi: Reel Stories, where the singer chats to Dermot O'Leary (below) about the pivotal moments of his life.

The pair sit down in a London cinema for a visual trip down memory lane that takes in his musical influences, his early 1980s route into music and Bon Jovi's huge success with their third album Slippery When Wet.

He also discusses his cherished relationship with his fans, his relationship with musical partner Richie Sambora - who left the band in 2013 - and the vocal issues he experiences in 2015.

There’s a break at 10.15pm for Later . . . with Jools Holland, which includes the Black Keys, Noel Gallagher, and Bristol singer Beth Gibbons, former All Saints member Shaznay Lewis, east London rapper Ghetts, joined by Sampha, and New York-born singer Ganavya.

Bon Jovi in Concert from 11.30pm concludes the night.

It’s a 2013 concert from the intimate confines of the BBC Radio Theatre, in which Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan and Tico Torres perform classics from six albums across their 30-year career.

New or Returning Shows

Striking with Pride: United at the Coalface, 9.00pm, Sky Documentaries & NOW

Between London Pride 1984 and 1985 an unlikely alliance was forged between the gay men and lesbians of London and the striking miners of South Wales.

Everyone loves a good love story: and this is one of the most unexpected and uplifting love stories ever, not between two people, but between two communities who found common cause and compassion for each other in the face of immense challenges and changed the course of history for queer people in the UK.

This feature documentary explores this remarkable tale, made famous by the film Pride ten years ago.

The real story behind the script is much richer and more powerful. And the legacy of these events are still felt to this day, forty years on since the 1984/1985 Miners’ Strike.

Don’t Miss

Rebus, 9.00pm, BBC One

I feel like I need a shower after watching this show, it’s so grubby. It makes Happy Valley look more like Happy Days.

I don’t watch it on Saturday nights either. That’s a time when something a bit more upbeat is required.

Anyway. This week, John discovers a connection between McJagger and an old colleague and begins to piece together the vendetta between Darryl Christie and Ger Cafferty.

Rhona makes a mistake when reconnecting with Chrissie and her family, while Michael forms an uneasy alliance when a lucrative proposal encourages him to recruit a team of ex-soldiers to target Cafferty's business.

Doctor Who, 6.50pm, BBC One

Last week’s episode – where the focus was firmly on Millie Gibson's Ruby (below) – was one of the greatest Who stories in the show’s long history.

As the fella says: 'Follow that!’

This week, the world of Finetime seems happy and harmonious, but its people refuse to see the terrible danger they live in.

The Doctor must convince them of the truth before it is too late.

New to Stream

Bonus Track, Sky Cinema & Now

Joe Anders, Samuel Small, Susan Wokoma, Ellie Kendrick, Josh O’Connor, Ray Pantaki star in this romantic comedy from director Julia Jackman.

It’s 2006, and George - a 16-year-old from a small town - is on the road to complete social and academic failure.

He knows he’s a gifted musician and dreams of being a star, but no one else seems to agree.

So, when Max - the son of a mega-famous musical duo - enrolls at his school and takes an interest in his music, George can’t believe his luck.

Neither can anyone else.

But as the boys grow closer, George questions why he wants to spend time with Max. George is faced with a potential dream come true - if he can figure out what that dream is now.

Saturday Cinema

Destin Daniel Cretton's fact-based drama, starring Michael B Jordan, Jamie Foxx and Brie Larson.

If you’re into legal dramas, this should make your Saturday night.

After graduating from Harvard, attorney Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation.

One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, sentenced to death in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl despite evidence proving his innocence, and Stevenson encounters racism and legal and political obstacles as he tirelessly fights for McMillian's life.

Meet Me in St Louis, 1.40pm, BBC Two

Here’s a magnificent musical, starring Judy Garland (below), Tom Drake and Margaret O'Brien.

This film was directed by Vincente Minelli, who fell in love with and later married Garland.

It’s worth watching just for the exhilarating Trolly Song and the melancholic Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. But there’s so much on offer here. It’s a joy from start to finish.

Story-wise, a job offer tempts a banker to consider uprooting his close-knit family and moving to New York.

But his wife and children struggle with the prospect of leaving their friends behind, and are horrified when they realise they might miss out on the 1904 St Louis World's Fair.

Meanwhile, teenage daughter Esther faces the abrupt termination of her romance with the boy next door.

Preceded at 1pm by an episode of Hollywood Greats, where Jonathan Ross investigates the tragic life behind the glamorous image of popular actress and child star Judy Garland.

Family Flick

This is an enjoyable, if rather bland modern take on the legendary cat and mouse rivals, in a part-animated family comedy, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, Michael Pena and Rob Delaney.

A chaotic battle ensues between Jerry Mouse, who has taken refuge in the Royal Gate Hotel, and Tom Cat, who is hired to drive him away before the day of a big wedding arrives.

Sport

It's Europan club football's big night as Borussia Dortmund face Real Madrid (KO 8.00pm) at London's Wembley Stadium.

Dortmund claimed a 2-0 aggregate victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals to reach the showpiece match for the first time since they lost to compatriots Bayern Munich in 2013 and will look to go one better this evening to emulate their triumph over Juventus in 1997.

Real edged past Bayern 4-3 on aggregate in their last-four tie and are now bidding to become champions of Europe for a record-extending 15th time, having last won the tournament two seasons ago when they overcame Liverpool.

Joanne Cantwell presents, with analysis from Richie Sadlier and Shay Given, and commentary by Darragh Maloney and Ray Houghton.

Live coverage of the match between Munster and Ulster (KO 5.15pm) from the 18th and final round of regular-season fixtures, held at Thomond Park.

Munster have secured their place in the quarter-finals, but will be looking for a win to guarantee top spot in the table.

Ulster go into this round of fixtures in sixth place, but a defeat could see them miss out on the knockout stages if other results go against them.
