Sunday Cinema
Carousel, 1.50pm, TG4
One of Rodgers and Hammerstein's lesser-shown musicals – it's downbeat by their standards, but still brilliant - and stars Gordon MacRae, Shirley Jones, Cameron Mitchell, Barbara Ruick and Gene Lockhart.
A criminal struggling to support his pregnant wife dies during a botched armed robbery but is given the chance to return to life 15 years later to help his family and teach his daughter a valuable lesson.
The most famous song in Carousel is You’ll Never Walk Alone, though the quality of composition is outrageously high, if not quite as catchy as, say, the tunes in The Sound of Music.
Best enjoyed on a rainy Sunday afternoon - so if the weather’s good today, press the red button and save it for another time. You won't regret it.
Director Philippa Lowthorpe's comedy drama, starring Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Jessie Buckley, is based on real-life events around the Miss World beauty pageant.
It's 1970, and comic icon Bob Hope is due to host Miss World in London, one of the most watched shows in the world.
But what the organisers and the Hollywood star do not count on is the newly formed women's liberation movement, who plan to disrupt the increasingly controversial ceremony.
