Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has said she loves the audience being in on the secret that is hanging over her protagonist Penelope Featherington as the second part of the third season drops on Netflix.

Penelope and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) are newly engaged, but he is unaware that she is Lady Whistledown, the show's anonymous gossip writer.

Speaking at a red carpet and screening event at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on Wednesday, the Irish actress said this quandary was central to the new episodes.

"I'm really excited about part two because they've just gotten engaged, it's very exciting, but everyone realises the big [Lady] Whistledown secret that's hanging over it," she said.

"That's why I love the audience knowing that and being in on the secret."

Luke Newton says Nicola Coughlan's character is in "a tortured place" in the new episodes

Newton continued of Penelope's predicament: "You're in a tortured place because you want to be in the honeymoon period but she's got this deep, dark secret that's really frustrating."

The 37-year-old Galway actress stunned on the red carpet in a romantic sparkly Rodarte gown with maroon velvet opera gloves.

A matching bow in her hair and a flowing tulle veil paid homage to the wedding theme of the new Bridgerton episodes.
