Behind the music - Iann Brennan

Emerging Irish Indie rock artist Iann Brennan has released his new single, Getaway. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Iann has opened for artists such as Aslan, Declan O'Rourke, Damien Dempsey, Lisa Hannigan and played the 3Olympia Theatre, Electric Picnic, Vicar Street and Cork's Opera House.

Getaway is from his debut album Start As You Mean To Go On and was written in late 2017.

"'The song was inspired by me seeking escapism from the reality of life with that special someone. That’s all anyone wants really, a stress-free life with the person you love," he says.

"The piano riff came accidentally from my keys player Del. We were sitting in a rehearsal room and we were going through a different song and he accidentally played that riff or something very similar. It’s probably my favourite song on the record"

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I'm from Finglas in North Dublin. I started writing songs at the age of 13. My first solo gig was supporting Aslan in the Bottom of the Hill pub in Finglas and It was probably the most nervous I've ever been.

How would you describe your music?

Big sound, anthemic, catchy and melodic. I try not to sound too much like my inspirations as hard as that can be sometimes. When recording the record, the goal was to sound like "Iann Brennan" was more of a band than one man and a guitar. I think we nailed that!

Who are your musical inspirations?

Growing up, I idolised Oasis, Kings of Leon, Stereophonics, U2, Arctic Monkeys to name a few. I think Noel Gallagher is a genius artist and songwriter. To this day I don't think I've heard a record sound as good as Because of The Times by Kings of Leon, the guitars are absolutely incredible sounding on that record.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

From memory, the first gig I saw was Stereophonics in The Point Depot in September 2005 and I've been in love ever since. I was 13 at the time and I just got my first electric guitar, an Epiphone SG, around that time also. So, when I saw Kelly come out with the Gibson SG It was a magical experience!

What was the first record you ever bought?

I remember mitching out of school in 2006 to go buy the first Arctic Monkeys record Whatever People Say I Am, Thats What I’m Not and I got caught by a family member queuing up outside of a record shop in Finglas village called The Music Box and got a few clips around the ear for it!

What’s your favourite song right now?

I just picked up Is This It? by The Strokes on vinyl. Incredible record. I love Hard To Explain from that record at the moment.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Probably "Trying to make ends The Verve meet, you're a slave to the money then you die" from Bittersweet Symphony by The Verve. Although, it's so hard to choose. My hallway has framed lyrics of some of my favourite songs and that's on there. One by U2 is also one of the greatest songs lyrically, ever written in my opinion.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

No idea how to choose this... Probably Heroes by Bowie. Song gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
