Michael Fassbender is to play the lead role in the upcoming Paramount+ spy thriller series The Agency.

The Hollywood Reporter says production on the show - formerly titled The Department and based on the French series Le Bureau des Legendes - has begun in London.

Fassbender will also serve as an executive producer on the series. George Clooney is another executive producer through his company, Smokehouse Pictures.

The Agency sees Fassbender playing "a CIA agent who's ordered to abandon his undercover life and return to London Station".

Jeffrey Wright will star opposite Michael Fassbender in The Agency

"When the love he left behind reappears, romance reignites," says the Hollywood Reporter. "His career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart, hurling them both into a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage."

Bond star Jeffrey Wright is also part of the cast of The Agency, playing the boss and mentor of Fassbender's character.

Fassbender will next be seen on cinema screens in Kneecap, the biopic of the West Belfast rap trio of the same name. The film arrives in cinemas on Thursday 8 August.
