Behind the music - Huntings

admin admin | 07-14 16:15

Irish post-punk grunge duo Huntings have released their new single, Doom, and play Toales, Dundalk on 19 July. We asked James of the band the BIG questions . . .

Formed from the ashes of a previous project after the bass player left, brothers James (guitar/vocals) and Brian Edwards (drums) began writing as a two piece. The songs being crafted were shorter, punchier and more immediate than previous efforts.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Well, the two of us are brothers, despite not looking like it! We've just finished recording our debut album. And we can leap over a double-decker bus from a standing start. I’ll let you decide which one is the lie…

How would you describe your music?

I would say a dynamic mix of alternative rock, grunge and post-punk. Our live shows tend to be fairly fast-paced and energetic. So, I’d always recommend checking them out!

Who are your musical inspirations?

Our main influences would be people like Nirvana, Pixies, Joy Division, PJ Harvey. But we’ve lots in between. On our upcoming album you can hear the influence of bands like Massive Attack and Portishead in there as well.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Weirdly, both of our first gigs were Foo Fighters. Brian saw them at the old SFX (ask your parents, kids!) and I saw them a couple of years later in the Olympia, which I mainly remember for Dave Grohl spending most of the gig climbing from one balcony to the next. That’s when I thought I could do that….I can climb on things.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I’ve always been proud to say the first album I ever bought was Superunknown by Soundgarden on cassette. Actually, it was on Brian’s recommendation so I have him to thank for that! It was either that or Mariah Carey so I think we’d sound slightly different today if that had’ve happened.

What’s your favourite song right now?

We both went to see CLT DRP upstairs in Whelan’s a few weeks ago and the gig was absolutely amazing. I haven’t stopped listening to their song Nothing Clever, Just feelings ever since.

Favourite lyric of all time?

I always gravitate towards lyrics that blend pain, aggression but also humour and have that tongue-in-cheek element to them. So, in that sense I could probably pick any line from the album Rid of Me by PJ Harvey. It’s almost like, take your pick!

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I think it’d have to be something from Nirvana’s In Utero for me, so it’d either be Milk It or Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. I think I could probably listen to those on repeat without ever getting bored.

Where can people find your music/more information?

You can find our music on Spotify, Bandcamp, Soundcloud and all good streaming services. Just search for HUNTINGS. You’ll find our latest single Doom and later this year we’ll be releasing our debut album, Songs of Last Resort, which we recorded with Terry Doyle at Soundcaster Studios. We’ll be touring in support of that album later this year. We’re also on Instagram @huntingsmusic.
