Union and Disney cast members fight for pay increase

Members of the Teamsters union joined Disney cast members for a rally outside Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, on Wednesday in a dispute over pay and conditions.

The union said Disney workers are fighting for fair wages, a reasonable attendance policy, seniority rights, and safe working conditions for cast members and guests.

A planned strike authorisation vote will be held on Friday, 19 July

Teamsters have accused Disney of unlawful discipline, intimidation, and surveillance tactics throughout the contract campaign.

Over 6,000 of the nearly 14,000 cast members at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and the Disney hotels are Teamsters.

The bargaining unit includes workers represented by Teamsters Local 495, Bakery Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM) Local 83, Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West (SEIU-USWW), and the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 324.

A planned strike authorisation vote will be held on Friday, 19 July.

Anton Farnby, Vice President of Service Employees International Union-United Service Workers West, told Reuters: "I would say it's not the happiest place no more for these cast members, right?

"While we respect the fact that Disneyland has built their brand, they've built it on the back of these workers.

"We feel that the workers should be compensated and they should be earning a part of what has been built, because they have led the way in building the Disneyland that we know today."
