Fans have been given a glimpse of Irish star Brendan Gleeson in the new trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux.

The Academy Award-nominated Dublin actor appears to play a security guard in the sequel to Todd Phillips's acclaimed 2019 thriller.

In the follow-up, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his Oscar-winning role as the deranged villain The Joker - aka Arthur Fleck - opposite Lady Gaga as the queen of chaos, Harley Quinn.

The film finds Arthur Fleck institutionalised at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his crimes as The Joker.

A synopsis reads: "While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him."

The new trailer sees Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn find a kindred spirit in The Joker.

"When I first saw Joker, when I saw you, for once in my life I didn't feel so alone anymore," she tells him.

Quinn later says: "You can do anything you want - you're Joker."

Meanwhile, Gleeson's character asks Fleck: "How about you Arthur, do you still think you're a star?"

The trailer also gives viewers a brief look at Steve Coogan, another new addition to the cast, interviewing The Joker.

The title of the film, which is set for release on 4 October - exactly five years after the first film - is a French reference to when two intimately related people share elements of the same mental illness, such as delusions.
