Dublin alt-pop band find-joy have released Reflection, the second single from their forthcoming EP, There's a Brighter Side To Life Than This. We asked them the BIG questions . . .

The group began with Tadhg Kelly (vocals) and Mark Allidine (guitar) creating tracks in a home studio during Mark's studies for a degree in creative music production. A collaboration titled White Lies with Colleen Conlon (vocals) followed.

They have since found their footing as a five piece with the addition of Tadhg’s brother Oscar Kelly (bass) and Fergal Mullen (drums) and have played Whelan’s and the Workmans Club in Dublin.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

Tadhg: I come from an incredibly gifted musical family, with my brother Oscar being the bassist in the band and a fantastic keys player, my older brother Daire being an incredible vocalist and my father being a very capable singer and guitarist himself. I am an extremely extroverted person, maintaining friendships and keeping those I love close to me is vital for the making of our music. I try not to take myself too seriously. It’s very easy to become cocky and arrogant and I think those people generally aren’t worth the time of day.

How would you describe your music?

Mark: I would refer to us as some sort of melange of alternative rock and pop, with a healthy dose of electronic influences. Having multi-instrumentalists and two vocalists in the group means that we’re very lucky to be able to fuse influences and better express our ideas. We live in our own little creative sphere that strives to blend familiar rock sounds with the digital tools that Ableton provides us with, especially in a live context. That relationship to live performance has a big impact on how we sound on record and our writing process. An egalitarian approach to writing is a massive part of our unique sound as well.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Mark: Some acts that immediately come to mind are Bristol’s Harvey Causon, who blends R&B and electronic music with gorgeous lyrics and storytelling. Spacey Jane and Squid, who in my humble opinion are the best live act on the planet right now, have this beautiful, untethered energy. As the producer of our music, I think my own influences have a huge impact on our tracks and I’m currently loving most of what London producer Ali Chant is working on. We often attend gigs together and we’re really spoiled by the zeitgeist of Irish music at the moment. Cardinals, NewDad and the brilliant lads in Gurriers are a just a few names that have blown us away lately.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Fergal: My first gig was Glasto 2002, Coldplay headlining on the pyramid stage. My parents had been going for a long time and began to bring my brother and I as a family tradition that we carried on for many years. Seeing all those legends and the eclectic acts on display really shaped my love for music and my passion for genre fusion.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Colleen: My first ever record was Don’t Forget by Demi Lovato, funnily enough, also her own first record as a musician. It came out in 2008 and I remember my dad taking me to HMV and asking for it and the poor employee had never even heard of Demi Lovato before.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Tadhg: My favourite song right now is Girl Behind the Glass by Wunderhorse, which are definitely one of my favourite acts of recent years.

Favourite lyric of all time?

Colleen: My favourite lyric is from a song called Good For You by Spacey Jane. The chorus starts with the line: "Little feelings wrapped around my tongue and I, Can't pretend I love the way it's easy to untie". Spacey Jane are such strong lyricists and metaphors like this are such a cool way to tell a story or convey an emotion through music.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Oscar: Right now, it’d be something by Steely Dan (always good! - Ed). Hard to choose but I’ll go with Deacon Blues.

Where can people find your music/more information?

You can find us @findjoymusic on all social media. Our songs are all available on major streaming platforms and we have lots of new music coming out at the moment! We’ll be announcing more shows in the coming months.
