Under Starling: 'You've got to be loud in every sense of the word'

"We feel there's a lot of focus on who's making waves in Dublin lately, rather than what’s going on in the rest of the country, which is teeming with talent. For ourselves, navigating the Irish music scene has been challenging to say the least.

"You’ve got to be loud in every sense of the word and when you’re up against major label artists who have the money to be louder it can be easy to get drowned out. But we believe that the quality of art wins overall at the end of the day and it’s a marathon, not a sprint."

The four-piece want to see more support given to homegrown independent and grassroots artists

The band hope their upcoming new track "inspires today's youth to reconnect with Irelands' rich culture of storytelling".

The song narrates an inspiring tale where the protagonist, upon receiving a seal skin from a Selkie, embarks on a journey to reunite with their beloved, while also celebrating the profound bond between two souls weathering life's storms.

"We hope Selkie inspires today’s youth to reconnect with Irelands' rich culture of storytelling and mythology to help preserve it for future generations to come.

"Over the course of making this single, we have realised that few people our age even know what a Selkie is. They’re more familiar with the word 'Selfie'. So we’re here to set the record straight with a modern twist.

"Also called the seal people, a Selkie is a marine legend that tells of people who are half-fish, and half-human. In the water, they are seals, but on land, they shed their skin and take on human form. And for some reason, they are irresistible to ordinary humans, who are apt to fall in love with the seal people.

"Speaking of love, the song uses the ancient folktale as a way to express the challenges and perseverance experienced by loved ones who are separated by distance. We hope Selkie can provide solace to those who can relate to this common issue faced by countless people throughout history and to this day."

The band have teamed up with Seal Rescue Ireland, who help preserve the native seal population in Ireland. All profits made from song sales and collaborative merch will go directly to the charity.

"We are delighted to be working alongside Seal Rescue Ireland for this single. They're an incredible charity dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of sick, injured, or orphaned seals.

"Tommy, our drummer, just came up with the idea when we were brainstorming for a campaign one night. But looking back on it now it’s a no-brainer. Our native seals here in Ireland are important keystone species and preserving their populations not only will benefit the overall health of marine ecosystems but will also keep our storytelling culture and sense of wonder alive."

Under Starling are gearing up for the release of their debut album called Murmurations

With the summer drawing to a close, what do Under Starling have their sights set on for the rest of 2024? "Our priority this year is the release of our debut album, Murmurations, which is set for release in late October.

"This record is an accumulation of our hard work and dedication over the years and we cannot wait to share it with the world. We also hope to get on the festival circuit as we thrive in a live setting."

Under Starling are set to release their new single, Selkie, on 26 July, while their upcoming debut album, Murmurations, is set for release on 25 October.
