Behind the music - Shy

Dublin-based, Ukrainian singer-songwriter Shy has released her new single, On The Roof. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

The former X-Factor participant says, "This song is about those quiet moments of reflection after saying goodbye to someone who has been a significant part of your life. Being on the roof symbolises a place where you can see everything clearly and begin to envision a new future.

"Since the pandemic and the full-scale war in Ukraine, not only have I had to rearrange my own life completely, but also watched so many of my friends living through their toughest times, making decisions that turned everything upside down and very often those decisions involved leaving people they once loved behind.

"You may not believe me, but I feel some of my friends' losses and breakups often hit me harder than my own hardships. So, this song is for everyone who has been through the pain of parting with their loved ones and facing a new life without them, for those who have been back to that square one".

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I was born and raised in Donetsk, Ukraine. I wanted to be a private investigator when I was a kid. I have a golden retriever named Oscar.

How would you describe your music?

I think most of my music has a strong feelgood vibe, it's simple but delicate, it’s guitar-based romantic indie.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Madison Cunningham. I went to see her live supporting John Mayer in 3Arena and I was blown away. Her Grammy-winning album Revealer is a masterpiece. I am also a big fan of Orla Gartland and Wolf Alice.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

It was a Ukrainian band called Boombox. They are one of the most successful bands in the history of Ukrainian music. It was back in 2012 and I was in my third year of university then. I was in love with a guy and I spent the whole gig just staring at his back. Didn’t enjoy the show much :)

What was the first record you ever bought?

I have never bought physical copies of records but I remember my first Apple Music purchase was Paramore by Paramore.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I don’t know what my favourite song is currently, but I’ve definitely listened to Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish for like a thousand times (same here! - Ed). I think that’s because it makes me feel so happy-sad.

Favourite lyric of all time?

I spent embarrassingly long on this one, still not sure if it’s my favourite of all time, but definitely very relatable. It’s from Delicious Things by Wolf Alice: "I'm socially anxious and a long way from home, I've only just learnt my margarita from mojito, so, Could I belong here?, The vibes are kinda strong here, Ask me if I'm from here and I won't say no."

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

The Water by Johnny Flynn and Laura Marling. That would also be my "die to" song :)

Where can people find your music/more information?

My music is on all the streaming platforms, including my latest album Awkward Tunes. Here’s a multilink. I have an Instagram account (@shyplace) and a TikTok with highly unpopular bedroom music videos.
