Ridley Scott has revealed the opening sequence to Gladiator II is the "biggest" of his long-spanning career.
The acclaimed filmmaker teased what cinema-goers can expect and revealed the eagerly-awaited movie, which stars Paul Mescal, contains the most action-filled scenes he has ever done.
Speaking to Empire, he said: "We begin the film with probably the biggest action sequence I've ever done.
"Probably bigger than anything in Napoleon."
In the trailer, Mescal is seen fending off rhino, which is created computerisation and AI.
"Computerisation and AI – you have to embrace it," he said.
Praising the technology, he added: "I can have a computer read every molecule and wrinkle on a rhino and then cut it on a thick piece of plastic, absolutely as a rhino's body, which is then tailored to a skeleton shape.
"I have this thing that can do 40 miles an hour, spin on the spot, wag its head and snarl. A two-ton rhino with a guy on its back! I mean, it’s a lot of fun."
Gladiator II picks up from where the first film left off and follows Mescal's Lucius, the now-grown-up son of Lucilla, played by Connie Nelson, and his fight for survival under the rule of tyrannical general Acacius (Pedro Pascal).
The new outing is set 20 years after the events of the original movie, with the estimated era for the sequel being 200AD.
A synopsis of the film reads: "Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist.
"With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people."
Denzel Washington also appears in the film as the wealthy powerbroker Macrinus, while Stranger Things and A Quiet Place: Day One star Joseph Quinn and The White Lotus actor Fred Hechinger play co-emperors Caracalla and Geta.
Gladiator II is set for release on 15 November 2024.
