Behind the music - Daughter Of A Drum

admin admin | 08-13 08:15

Kildare artist Daughter Of A Drum aka Aoife McAtamney has released her new single, Space, featuring Justin Vivian Bond, with her new album Pink Breath to follow. She performs at Ireland Music Week 3 to 4 October. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Space coincides with the premiere of the trailer for her upcoming film Pink Breath, the visual accompaniment to her debut album, set to drop on 30 August.

Space was born from a serendipitous meeting nearly a decade ago between Daughter Of A Drum and artist and activist Justin Vivian Bond at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Monaghan.

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I'm a shy person with a big vocal range. Once my voice was measured at 99bd in a performance, the same volume as a subway train! I have that joie de vivre living for the pleasures of life.

How would you describe your music?

Cathartic and sensual because it invites audiences to get into their feelings and the mystery of life. Urgent because it archives experiences I find value in sharing. Always with a groove and witty lyrics!

Who are your musical inspirations?

My pillars are Justin Vivian Bond for purpose, Sam Amidon for voice and Ryuichi Sakamoto for sound.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Destiny’s child at the point theatre in November 2000 when I was a tot! I swear Beyoncé waved at me from the stage…

What was the first record you ever bought?

I was obsessed with 1993's Sister Act 2 which introduced me to Lauren Hills voice so when her collaborative album The Score by the Fugees came out in 1996, I was first in line to pick up the CD.

What’s your favourite song right now?

I’ve been listening to Willow Smith’s entire Empathogen album on repeat. If I had to choose one song from it as a favourite it would be Home featuring Jon Batiste.

Favourite lyric of all time?

I will never forget hearing Bloody Mother F***ing A**hole by Martha Wainwright. This song gave me permission.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Let it Be Me by The Everley Brothers but Nina Simone 1971 live at Fort Dix version featuring her brother Sam Waymon.

Where can people find your music/more information?

On all major streaming platforms and includes Bandcamp. My debut album Pink Breath is out 30 August and my duet Space with Justin Vivian Bond is out now so please check out the records! I’m performing at Ireland Music Week, for daily updates find me on Instagram and twitter @daughterofadrum.
