Is the Electric Picnic about to get even bigger?

Electric Picnic promoter Melvin Benn has said that he can see Ireland's biggest music festival becoming even bigger.

75,000 tickets were sold this year for the annual event in Stradbally, Co Laois, with an increase of 5,000 music fans at this year's event - but it still sold out quickly.

Mr Benn says he intends to talk to Laois County Council about the possibility of increasing capacity, but is "quite happy with where we are right now".

He added: "It's up the council to see if there is more room" but also admitted: "I am on the receiving end of aggressive behaviour from some individuals nearing retirement age" who disprove of the event.

Tickets for next year’s festival go on sale on Wednesday and the event will return to its traditional slot of the last weekend in August.

Mr Benn also responded to accusations from festival goers claiming there was nowhere for them to pitch their tents and they had to walk for prolonged periods to find a camping spot.

"You have to have a contingency plan for camping and we didn’t expect people to arrive as early on Friday as they did," he said.

"The arrival pattern was about two or three hours earlier than it usually is and that meant people got in earlier and people had to go to the next campsite."
