Behind the music - ASH

Beijing-raised, NYC-based alt-R&B star ASH has released her debut single, Infatuated. We asked her the BIG questions . . .

Speaking about the track, ASH says, "Everyone remembers when they were young and eager to experience love for the first time, and I think everyone also remembers how consuming that innocent desire could be.

"Infatuated comes from that unrelenting desire, but more specifically from the heart-wrenching experience of when your first partner is your first love, but you're not theirs.

"For those who can relate to this, it's a painfully different kind of first love - a kind in which you start experiencing your first love and first heartbreak pretty much simultaneously. Infatuated captures how paralysing that is."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I'm from Beijing, China., I have two degrees and I write and produce all my music.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as moody, intimate, and atmospheric.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Some of my biggest musical inspirations are FKA twigs, Sade, and Frank Ocean.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first concert I ever went to was Beyoncé in 2009 on her I Am Sasha Fierce World Tour in Beijing.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I believe the first record I ever bought was Come Away With Me by Norah Jones.

What’s your favourite song right now?

My favourite song right now is Jungle by a super talented up-and-coming Asian-American band called Chanpan.

Favourite lyric of all time?

One of my favourite lyrics is from Tyler, The Creator’s Running Out Of Time: "I found peace in drowning".

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It might have to be He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat) by Jill Scott. The production is insane and her vocal delivery is so enveloping.

Where can people find your music/more information?

You can find me on Instagram @ashzixuan to see more of the person behind the music and you can find my music on all streaming platforms!
