Behind the music - Paddy Sherlock

admin admin | 08-21 16:15

Dublin musician Paddy Sherlock has released his new single, Those Summers In Dublin. We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Paddy lives as a musician and actor in Paris but his new song is an ode to Ireland's musical prowess, with a title referencing Bagatelle’s Summer in Dublin.

Paddy played Electric Picnic with Jack Lukeman at this year’s Electric Picnic and has shared the stage with Glen Hansard, Jerry Fish, Mary Black, Mundy, Lesley Dowdall and Liam O’Maonlai.

"My next album is profoundly based in nostalgia. It’s a wonderful well to draw from for your inspiration," he says.

"I wrote Those Summers In Dublin in Paris. Imagining where and what I’ve come from. It’s the story of a man who having spent 40 years away comes back and rediscovers and rekindles his love for his old town.

"He doesn’t belong. He’s changed. But as he walks through the city, wandering, a bit like Léopold Bloom, he realises to an overwhelming emotion. He’s still part of Dublin and Dublin is still part of him."

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I’ve lived my whole adult life as an unending and fantastic artistic adventure in that city I love, Paris. I set out 40 years ago from Dublin, looking for artistic romance and inspiration and found it on the streets and in the sweaty clubs of the Latin quarter. David Gilmour came to one of my gigs in Zermatt, Switzerland and so liked my band, he asked could he sit in and jam. Three nights in a row. I sneak off to Africa every winter to an island called Mar Lodj in Sénégal. No cars, no electricity. A beach 10m from my little cabin. An ideal place to write my songs.

How would you describe your music?

I play trombone and I love New Orleans music so mostly New Orleans second line brass band rhythm songs along with a cooler more intimate singer songwriter vibe.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Louis Armstrong, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Van Morrison, Tom Waits and, less well known, Brisa Roche.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

The first one I remember as life changing was Ella Fitzgerald in 1980 and also BB King somewhere about the same time at a Cork Opera House. I remember leaving the BB King concert all excited and saying to myself that’s what I want to do.

What was the first record you ever bought?

Led Zeppelin 2 and told all my friends but I also bought an Abba record a week later but told nobody.

What’s your favourite song right now?

Martha - Tom Waits.

Favourite lyric of all time?

So many. Maybe On The Street Where You Live by Lerner and Lowe or Putting on The Ritz by Irving Berlin or The Nearness of You by Ned Washington and Hoagy Carmichael. Lyrics are really important to me. I can’t sing a song unless the lyrics really are beautiful.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Kashmir - Led Zeppelin. VERY loud.

Where can people find your music/more information?

My website.
