A first look image of Oscar-nominated Irish actor Ciarán Hinds in the second series of Lord Of The Things: The Rings of Power has been released, while details of his character have also been revealed.

The spin-off series, which is inspired by author JRR Tolkien's extended notes, is set thousands of years before the events of the world-renowned The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings books, and follows the events of the Second Age and the forging of the famous rings.

The first season of The Rings of Power was a huge success, viewed by more than 100 million people worldwide, with more than 32 billion minutes streamed.

The Academy Award-nominated Belfast and Kin actor has joined the show for its second run and will play a character called Dark Wizard.

An image of Hinds in character shows him with long hair, an equally luscious beard, flowing robes and an ornate staff.

A character description for Dark Wizard reads: "It turns out, the mysterious being known as the Stranger is not the only wizard who has come to Middle-earth….for in the mysterious lands of Rhûn, another wizard awaits him.

"A dark and powerful wizard, whose origins and intentions are shrouded in secrecy, and who has a legion of magic-wielding acolytes who obey his every command — among them the three travelers who sought out the Stranger at the end of Season 1…on the Dark Wizard's orders."

The trailer for the second season of the blockbuster series debuted in July at Comic Con in San Diego.

The action-packed trailer focuses on the long-feared reemergence of the legendary villain Sauron, heralding the return of darkness and evil to Middle-earth after many years of hard-fought peace among all of its realms.

The trailer teases several major battle scenes that will be pivotal to season two's storylines, as well as giving fans a glimpse at some of the fantastical creatures that will feature, including a young Shelob, an army of Barrow-wights, Hill-troll Damrod and a Sea Worm.

Alongside Hinds, Rory Kinnear and Tanya Moodie are also newcomers for season two, while actors Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Maxim Baldry, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova and Charles Edwards are among the ensemble cast for the series.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power returns to Prime Video on 29 August.
