Behind the music - Jamie Sparks

Canadian R&B and soul singer, songwriter and record producer Jamie Sparks has released his new single, Are You The One? We asked him the BIG questions . . .

Tell us three things about yourself . . .

I have seven brothers and sisters, I like fixing things, and I rarely listen to music. I could drive in my car for an hour and sit in complete silence. Doesn't bother me a bit.

How would you describe your music?

I would describe my music as soul/R&B. I like to make music that I believe uplifts and inspires people; music to raise your vibration.

Who are your musical inspirations?

My main musical inspiration would be Teddy Riley. I listened to him religiously when he was creating tracks back in the day for artists like Heavy D, Wrexx-n-Effect, Guy, Keith Sweat and Blackstreet.

What was the first gig you ever went to?

Can't remember the exact first, but I can remember one of the earliest, and more memorable gigs I did. I was asked to perform one of my songs at a local event and quickly said yes. I never knew much or asked about sound systems, so I didn't. I showed up thinking I'd be on a huge stage with thousands of people and a mega Michael Jackson sound system. There were about 30 people and I had a one-speaker handheld cassette tape player as my sound system. It was bad lol.

What was the first record you ever bought?

I can't remember the first record I ever bought. I can remember one of the first albums bought for me. My older sister bought me a Sony Walkman with a cassette tape of Whitney Houston. I was super excited about that. I loved her music. I never asked for that album, and I honestly wasn't a huge fan, but my sister liked her and figured I would also...and I did!

What's your favourite song right now?

Changes often but right now I'm listening to a song by Vertical Horizon called Everything you Want. I listened to that song a bunch when it came out in 1999. I haven't listened to it for years, and now I'm listening to it again. Strange.

Favourite lyric of all time?

"You load 16 tons, what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt, St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go, I owe my soul to the company store" - Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford. I'm not sure when this was released; sometime in the 1950s or '60s. Well before my time, but I always loved this lyric because even though it was written so long ago, it's still relevant today. So many of us are in debt, this song could have been written yesterday! The older I get, the more I owe. Should be the other way around lol. It's got a bit of a sad message, but I just love the music.

If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

If I had to listen to one song for the rest of my life, I think I'd go insane. That sounds like torture lol.

Where can people find your music/more information?
