Paris-based Irish singer-songwriter Liv Monaghan has released the video for her new song, Alltar, which was shot in Glendalough. We asked her the BIG questions . . .
The bilingual track is taken from her new album, First Light and draws inspiration from the book 32 Words for Field by Manchán Magan.
"The song and video are a tribute to the richness of the Irish language and its deep ties to the land," Liv says. "It's a song I wrote with displaced people in mind and how the spirit of everything is eternal."
Tell us three things about yourself . . .
I'm based in Paris. Beauty is to me what the sun is to most plants. Cats inspire me on a daily basis.
How would you describe your music?
I think of my music as a child. From my first EP, Beauty in the Park, to my latest album, First Light, the child has grown and evolved. There's a lot of jazz and folk influence in First Light but also a touch of soul and pop. My new song, Alltar, was influenced by the Sean Nós tradition. There is a lot here, stringing a necklace of experiences and spirits together and having them make sense through the honesty in the sound.
Who are your musical inspirations?
Esperanza Spalding, Duke Ellington, Joni Mitchell, John and Alice Coltrane and my bass player, Sava Medan.
What was the first gig you ever went to?
I was brought to operas and musicals as a wane, but the first concert that I chose to attend myself was Alicia Keys in Dublin for her Songs in A Minor tour.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Mariah Carey's Daydream.
What’s your favourite song right now?
Round Midnight - Samara Joy.
Favourite lyric of all time?
"I could drink a case of you darling, and I would still be on my feet, Oh I would still be on my feet" - A Case of You by Joni Mitchell.
If you could only listen to one song for the rest of your life, what would it be?
This is a terrible fate for any song... something very peaceful....so maybe Fleurette Africaine sung by Norah Jones.
Where can people find your music/more information?
On my website or by following me on Instagram.
