How to repair your hair when it's damaged

As the seasons change, our hair and skin are often the first to show signs of damage.

While many of us have put time and effort into perfecting a skincare routine, our tresses can still sometimes be forgotten, between daily styling, sweaty workouts, summer sunshine and more.

"It's all about nourish[ment] and treatments", Lee advised, adding that investing in professional products will bring a noticeable improvement to your locks. "Now I understand they're a little bit more expensive, but there are reasons behind that because the ingredients are spectacular and they are working with your hair, and not against your hair."

As anyone who has invested a lot of money into products that promise the world would know, not every expensive shampoo or mask is going to suit your hair, so how do you know what ingredients and products to prioritise?

Planning ahead and around your schedule goes a long way. For example, if you're heading on a sunny holiday, Lee suggests bringing "a really good shampoo, a really good conditioner and the one that everyone forgets about, the heat protectors. The golden goose!"

Speaking of golden, heat and bright sun can lead to highlights and colours fading from your hair, and Lee is full of tips for getting around this. Top of her list are pigmented masks to top up your colour and prolong it between salon visits. "You leave it in for 10 minutes, and you literally rinse it out and boom, you are fresh!"

It's all well and good treating your curls and lengths, but if you're not showing your scalp some love, all that work will be for nothing. Scalp care is another majorly important part of hair health, Lee says.

"Sometimes the scalp can get so badly burned and it can start to shed away and all, it's really sore and it's really effective on the hair", she says. "So you need to make sure you're using a product, there are products out there, that have SPF in them." This is doubly important if you have a deep parting, she adds.

Social media is filled with tips and tricks for scalp care, some of them incredibly contradictory. Should we oil the scalp, or detox it?

"For one, why would we be oiling the scalp when the majority of people already have an oil that comes through?" she asks. "Unless you want to walk around greasy, like you look like you could fry an egg on your head, then I'm not here for that look. I'm here for a cleansing shampoo, that would remove any residue off the scalp."

She adds: "If there's a build up on the scalp, which there would be from every day, from the air, the smoke, the this, that and the other. Like your skin, you have to cleanse your skin."

Doing so, she says, allows the hair follicles to breathe and becoming healthier.
