From the rugby league fields of Ōtara to Australia’s NRLW grand final stage, 21-year-old Annessa Biddle is about to play the biggest game of her career.

On Sunday, the Kiwi will line up for the Cronulla Sharks against the Sydney Roosters – a journey she describes as nothing short of surreal.

"When I think about making the grand finals, it’s still an unreal feeling," she said.

"I thought it was on my bucket list, but I didn’t realise it would happen so soon."

Her rise to stardom has been rapid. The talented centre was first discovered last year while playing for the Ōtara Scorpions in South Auckland.

A standout performance in a televised match caught the eye of NRLW scouts, leading to an offer that would change her life.

Biddle said: "Just being scouted from a live stream to coming to play on the big screen. It feels like no words can describe."

The transition from Ōtara to Australia's professional league was swift.

Last year, Biddle was named the 2023 Dally M Rookie of the Year after a breakout season with the Sharks, scoring two tries in her debut.

Her strength, speed, and skill quickly made her a key player for Cronulla.

"It was such a big transition to come all the way from Ōtara to Australia," she reflected.

"I still feel like I’m buzzing."

Family has been a constant source of motivation for the player, including her twin sister, who never hesitates to give honest feedback about her performance on the field.

"She gives it to me straight. She knows if I had a bad game or a good game, and she’ll tell me."

This weekend will mark the first time her family will get to watch her play live in the NRLW.

"My family will always be my motivation," she shared.

"It's gonna be really emotional. But I think I’m also just excited."

As if the grand final wasn't enough, Biddle is also in the running for Centre of the Year at Wednesday's Dally M Awards, capping off what has been a stellar season for the young star.

"It’s hard to put into words how I’m feeling, but I think one word describes it – grateful," she said. "For my opportunities and where I am today."
