International mission to sail desperately needed aid into Gaza blocked

Three Kiwi doctors planning to sail with an independent flotilla carrying aid to Gaza have had their mission scuppered at the last minute and blame Israel for the delay.

The group, Dr Ali Al-Kenani, Dr Wasfi Shahin and Dr Faiez Idais, left for Istanbul 10 days ago where they joined other international volunteers in the so-called "Freedom Flotilla Coalition".

Flotilla organisers said the boats were set to sail under the flag of the West African nation of Guineau Bisseau but said the nation withdrew permission to use its flag at the last minute.

An Instagram post from the coalition accused Israel of political interference.

"Israel has sabotaged the freedom flotilla."

There has been no response yet from Israel, but last week Israeli media reported the government hoped the flotilla would be delayed indefinitely.

"Without a flag, we cannot sail," American activist Huwaida Arraf said.

"But this is not the end. Israel cannot and will not crush our resolve to break its siege."

Kiwi activist Roger Fowler said it was a "major setback".

"The boats were packed full of humanitarian aid, medical aid, and food stuff which is desperately needed."

Al-Kenani, who practices medicine in Auckland's New Lynn, said the move blindsided the group.

"That was unexpected and we are disappointed."

In the meantime, the flotilla needs another flag to sail under.

"This is not over," organisers said. "We need the whole world to step up."
