The latest 1News Verian poll will be released tonight - exactly one year on from the 2023 general election.

The last poll results, in August, suggested voters were steadily warming to Christopher Luxon, with a 5% lift in his result as preferred prime minister, the biggest increase he’d achieved since becoming prime minister.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins was in second place as preferred prime minister, with a steady result on the preceding poll at 18%.

Party votes also held firm in the August poll, suggesting the coalition government would retain its power with 64 total seats. That would be down from the 68 it currently holds in Parliament.

Tonight’s poll, which will be released tonight on 1News at Six and 1News.co.nz, conducted interviews with 1000 eligible voters from Saturday October 5 to last Wednesday, October 9.

Since the last poll, Christopher Luxon again ruled out the National Party supporting ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill beyond first reading, and the Government announced $33 billion to be spent on transport over the next three years, with a greater focus on road maintenance and highways.

Labour leader Chris Hipkins confirmed a wealth tax or capital gains tax were among ideas under consideration as campaign positions for the next election, while the ANZ chief executive Antonia Watson expressed support for a capital gains tax. In response Luxon said National did not support a capital gains tax.

Luxon also moved into Premier House after it had repairs and the sale of his Wellington apartment, and Labour criticised the Government's tax cut for heated tobacco products and the independent advice Associate Health Minister Casey Costello drew on for the decision.

On September 26, the Government announced plans to scale back the redevelopment of Dunedin Hospital.

Also today, voters' views on whether New Zealand is in better shape or worse shape a year on from the election will be revealed on TVNZ's Breakfast and on the 1News.co.nz website after 8am, with more to be revealed on 1News at Six tonight.
