Fair Go show final: 'It's not over — we will still be here'

The team behind Fair Go are "gutted to say goodbye" as TVNZ aired the show's final episode tonight, but want New Zealanders to know: "We'll still be here for you."

Host Pippa Wetzell was joined by the rest of the Fair Go team as they bid farewell to what has been a cornerstone of Kiwi television.

"Thanks to you — our viewers — for making our time on Fair Go so special," she said.

"For writing to us, for watching us and for supporting us for nearly five decades."

Wetzell said: "As we have always said — this show is all about you.

"While we are gutted to say goodbye to Fair Go in its current form — it's not over.

"We will still be here for you online."

The Fair Go brand is set to live on — with a new four-person long-form consumer and current affairs team to make content for TVNZ's digital platforms.

"The inbox is still very much open for business," reporter Garth Bray said.

Kiwis can continue to get in touch with TVNZ's consumer affairs journalists at fairgo@tvnz.co.nz or in the post - PO BOX 3819, Auckland 1140.

The consumer affairs show has been on air since April 1977 but TVNZ confirmed last month it won't live on in its current form.

In April, TVNZ confirmed Fair Go, alongside Sunday, and its Midday and Tonight news bulletins would be axed due to a slump in advertising revenue.

Sunday's final show aired last night, while Midday and Tonight switched off the lights last week. There have also been cuts at Re: News.

Speaking to Breakfast this morning, Wetzell said it was "going to be a really tough day".

"But we're also excited to sort of honour the legacy of this phenomenal programme so it'll be a good day as well."

She said that Fair Go had done "so many wonderful things over the years".

We've pulled some clips from the archives that have never seen the glaring light of an HD TV, and they're sure to give you that warm, fuzzy, Fair Go-y feeling.

Wetzell said she couldn't help but reflect on the big stories but "you sometimes forget that there's little moments scattered through every episode for the past 47 years".

These moments, Wetzell added, were what made the show great.

"It's a moment because someone wasn't being listened to. They tried everything they could possibly try. And then to have someone come beside them and say 'we'll go into bat for you', or say 'we'll help you fight for this', and how meaningful that is, it's huge."
