Irish Men Abroad

When traveling, it's easy to maintain a stylish and polished look once you master the basics. The men of this nation are getting better when it comes to style choices, but I think we all know how instantly recognisable an Irishman abroad can be.

As men of Europe, we still so often fall short of many of our stylish neighbours, when it comes to summer style standards. Avoid these common Irish men abroad fashion pitfalls:

Graphic Tees

While graphic tees can be fun, they often come across as juvenile and lack the refined edge of a well-curated wardrobe. Opt instead for plain or subtly patterned t-shirts that exude maturity and style. Shop around for a shape and cut that suits you best and invest in good quality where possible.

High quality

Speaking of which, be sure to elevate your style by choosing brands that emphasise quality and design, reflecting a more sophisticated aesthetic. This doesn't necessarily mean that you need to shop for expensive designer brands. Retailers like Massimo Dutti offer sophisticated, quiet luxury and reasonable prices.

Jerseys

Jerseys, whether GAA, soccer, or otherwise, are best reserved for the stadium. Wearing sports jerseys casually can appear lazy and out of place, especially when traveling abroad where fashion standards might be higher. Let's keep our jerseys for a day out in Croke Park.

Knee-Length Shorts and Cargo Shorts

Shorts that extend below the knee or have numerous pockets can make your silhouette look bulky and dated. Instead, choose well-fitted shorts that enhance your shape and provide a cleaner, more streamlined look. Do the shorts have more than two pockets, on the front? Avoid.

GAA Shorts

An exception to the rule! I may be banning your GAA jersey usage (outside of the stadium or the gym), but the shorts are absolutely allowed. Thanks to the Paul Mescal effect, GAA shorts have now been replicated by brands has high-fashion as Gucci.

The Maynooth actor has managed to make these white shorts sexy and cool because he knows how to style them. For example, you could pair them with a sleek black buttoned up, short-sleeve shirt with a lapel collar, like this one from H&M for €29.99, and a pair of Birkenstocks.

Superior Craftmanship

This summer, the focus is on simplicity and superior craftsmanship with our t-shirt fashion.

Danish Minimalism

Embrace the clean lines and understated elegance characteristic of Danish minimalism. This style favours high-quality fabrics and simple cuts, ensuring you look effortlessly stylish.

Oversized Cuts

Oversized t-shirts are all about the fit and structure. High-neck designs with a loose fit can create a modern, relaxed silhouette that is both comfortable and chic. Wide sleeve t-shirts like this one can look brilliant tucked into a cool pair of tailored shorts.

Top Brands

If you feel like treating yourself, the coolest t-shirt brands to invest in this summer are Jacquemus, Ami Paris, and Loewe.

These brands are renowned for their exceptional quality, innovative designs and very cool men at the helm. Go for logos that aren't too in-your-face but present, so when fellow fashion-lovers spot you out on the strip, you will master that 'if you know, you know' effect.

Sandro Paris Collection

Sandro Paris offers a stand-out t-shirt and shirt collection that combines gorgeous viscose materials with straight-cut designs, often featuring zips and collars. These high quality pieces can be found at Kildare Village, where you can score them at up to 50% off, making this more luxurious French brand a stylish and affordable choice.

The Right Fit

Selecting the right fit for your shorts and trousers can significantly enhance your overall summer look.

Tailored Shorts

Aim for tailored shorts that fall a few inches above the knee. A pair in black, navy, and grey are all you'll need. The 'traveler's crease' down the centre of the shorts adds a touch of sophistication, making them suitable for dressier summer occasions. COS usually have super summer short options.

Baggy Trousers

Smart, wide-legged trousers are now in style for men. These roomier pants are not only more comfortable in the searing summer sun, but also bring a cool, relaxed vibe to any outfit. Inspired by the 70s and 90s, they work for both casual and formal occasions. It's long overdue that you ditch those tight slim or skinny trousers and embrace the fresh, stylish look of wide-leg trousers. However, if you don't feel brave enough to do this just yet, a straight-cut option will work.

High-Waisted Trousers

Wide-leg or 'smart balloon' trousers are the coolest choice this summer. Make this an even slicker look by braving a high-waisted pair! A high-waisted option will look great with a tucked-in t-shirt or shirt, creating a balanced and polished appearance.

Socks

Socks are a small but significant part of your outfit, no matter the season. For example a tapered black trouser, with a black shoe and a black sock can be super chic. Equally a white trainer with white socks can look great with shorts in summer.

Gen Z Trends

Despite Gen Z's claim that ankle socks or 'pop socks' are outdated and 'cancelled', these socks can still be appropriate depending on the context. When paired correctly, they can enhance your look rather than detract from it. It's just about knowing when it's time for a sock or when it's time for the sock to be hidden.

Sock Colours

Stick to classic, simple and safe colours like white and black. These monochrome sock options can subtly compliment almost any outfit, adding a subtle touch of trendy elegance.

Marni

Summer Shoes

The right footwear can elevate your entire outfit. That is to say, flip-flops are best left for running from your locker to the shower in the gym. For a more sophisticated summer-foot look, bin the flip-flop and opt for a Birkenstock.

Birkenstocks remain a stylish and yet practical choice for summer (they're super comfy!). Their laid-back, super cool vibe works well with a variety of outfits. As much as the brand Birkenstock may own the title to this type of summer shoe style, many brands now make their own version. For example, I recently purchased a super pair from Italian brand Marni.

NB: Don't neglect your feet. Proper foot care is essential for summer when our feet get a lot more public exposure than normal.

White Runners

A versatile pair of white runners is a must-have. They can be dressed up with a suit or down with shorts, making them a valuable addition to your summer wardrobe. Trendy brands like Autry and Axel Arigato offer excellent options that exude that Parisian or Berlin cool vibe.

Summer Suit

A well-chosen summer suit is needed for those dressier summer occasions.

Double-Breasted Suits

Why not try a double-breasted jacket paired with wide-block trousers in a classic colour like black or navy (you will get the most wear out of these colours). This combination offers an effortless sophistication.

T-Shirts

Pair your suit with an oversized, wide-sleeve white t-shirt tucked in. Or if you are confident you have the arms for it, go for a high-quality tank top. This creates a stylish, relaxed look that balances formality with casual ease.

Fabrics

Choose lightweight fabrics like linen or cotton for your summer suit, in order to stay somewhat cool sun. Brands like COS offer a variety of suitable options that combine comfort with elegance. When choosing cotton options be careful to ensure they are 100% cotton, as this will ensure a more lightweight option.

Tailoring

Ensure your suit fits perfectly by having it tailored. A well-fitted suit can significantly enhance your appearance, making you look sharp and refined. It's one of my biggest tips for all your suits, have them tweaked to fit you perfectly. I personally use Zipyard Alterations as they are quick, easy and affordable and they are dotted all over Ireland.

Footwear

Complete your summer-suit look with either Birkenstocks for a relaxed, stylish vibe or white trainers for a sporty-chic ensemble. By following these guidelines, you'll be well-prepared to navigate the summer of 2024 with confidence and style. Embrace these trends and don't be afraid to infuse your personal touch, ensuring you stand out for all the right reasons.
