Top tips for finding the perfect shirt

In a world where fashion trends come and go, finding timeless pieces that withstand the test of time is invaluable.

Christian Lawlor, founder of Irish menswear brand Kempt, shares his expert advice on selecting shirts that not only exude style, but also endure through seasons.

"Building a timeless wardrobe starts with understanding what makes a piece truly durable and stylish," says Christian. "It's not just about following trends but choosing quality over quantity."

Opt for natural fibres

Choose shirts made from natural fibres like cotton, linen, or wool. These materials age better and offer superior comfort compared to synthetics. Quality well-made things are one of the best examples of sustainability. They may cost a bit more, but you need fewer of them as they will last a long time.

Seek out high-quality cotton

For ultimate durability and comfort, look for shirts made from Egyptian or Pima cotton. These types of cotton have longer fibres, which make the fabric stronger and softer.

Consider the weight of the fabric

The performance of a fabric is very important. Different fabrics come in various weights. For example, heavier fabrics can create great casual shirts while still being light enough to wear with a casual jacket.

Check the stitching

Examine the stitching on a shirt. High-quality shirts often feature French seams and single-needle tailoring, which provide extra strength and a clean finish.

Pay attention to buttons and fastenings

Regarding the fastenings, I would consider them as important. They are the finishing touches. There’s no point in going to great effort selecting an amazing fabric for a shirt and then falling short on the finishing touches. Mother-of-pearl buttons are a hallmark of a well-made shirt.

Ensure a proper fit

A shirt that fits well will move with you, reducing stress on the fabric. Look for shoulder seams that sit at the edge of your shoulders and sleeves that are the right length. A shirt should create a nice silhouette without being uncomfortable to wear.

Stick to timeless colours

Our colour palette includes whites, blues, soft greens, and naturals, all of which have relevance year-round. These classic colours form the backbone of any elegant outfit and remain stylish over time.

Avoid trendy patterns

While fun patterns certainly have their place, it's worth considering that they may be more transient pieces in your wardrobe. Stick to classic patterns like stripes, checks, or solids. Trendy patterns can quickly look dated, while classic designs remain stylish over time.

Invest in seasonal capsules

We have introduced a very small seasonal capsule this spring. While we primarily focus on timeless styles, occasionally introducing seasonal pieces can refresh your wardrobe without compromising its core elegance.

Care for your shirts properly

Follow the care instructions on the label to maintain the fabric and construction of your shirts. Proper washing and ironing can significantly extend a shirt's life.
