Heavy rain warnings have been issued for the ranges of central and southern New Zealand from tomorrow into the beginning of next week.
MetService said an active front preceded by a strong moist northerly flow is expected to move over the country tomorrow and Monday.
"These systems are expected to bring rain to central and northern parts of the country, with heavy rain about the ranges of central and southern New Zealand."
Heavy rain can cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly, with surface flooding and slips possible, the agency warned.
Orange heavy rain warnings have been issued across the west of the South Island.
Tasman northwest of Motueka is under a warning from 11am tomorrow until 2am Monday.
About 100-150mm of rain is expected around the ranges, with 30-60mm closer to the coast.
The ranges of the Westland District can expect 120-140mm of rain from 9am tomorrow until 1am Monday.
Peak rates of 10-15mm/h are expected during the afternoon and evening, but 25mm/h may fall in possible thunderstorms.
About 70-90mm of rain is expected around the Paparoa Ranges and the ranges of the Buller District between 2pm tomorrow and 1am Monday with peak rates of 10-15mm/h expected during the afternoon and evening – but again, that could rise to 25mm/h in the event of thunderstorms.
Heavy rain watches have also been issued for Mount Taranaki, the Tararua Range, Richmond and Bryant Ranges and the Canterbury Headwaters. All begin around midday on Sunday and end early on Monday morning.
