Part SH60 over Tākaka Hill down to one lane after underslip

Travellers are being warned of delays on State Highway 60 over Tākaka Hill after recent wet weather caused "a large amount of earth" under the road to slip away.

The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) said the underslip was located on the Riwaka side of the Hill, approximately 1km uphill from the Riwaka Valley Rd intersection and temporary traffic management is in place.

"The affected road section is down to a single lane, under stop/go traffic lights 24/7 and a 30 km/h temporary speed limit. Bollards have also been installed to keep traffic clear of the underslip," NZTA's top of the south system manager Rob Service said.

He said drivers can expect delays of up to 10 minutes and should allow extra time for their trips when travelling over the Tākaka Hill.

"It's important to acknowledge work to repair slips on State Highway 60 Tākaka Hill following Cyclone Gita is holding up well. This section of highway is not one that has required attention in the past," Service said.

An initial geotechnical assessment was carried out late last week, and a more detailed inspection would be completed as "soon as possible" as work at the site remained ongoing.
