Motorcyclist dies in crash fleeing police in Gisborne

A motorcyclist has died after colliding with a vehicle while fleeing police in Gisborne this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the scene on State Highway 35 at 4pm, Inspector Darren Paki said.

"Police had signalled for the rider to stop however they fled from police," he said.

"Police discovered the motorcycle crashed and the rider deceased."

Inquiries into the circumstances behind the crash are ongoing.

SH35 was closed while the serious crash unit completed a scene examination and has sine reopened.
