Nelson Hospital, four schools in precautionary lockdown

Nelson Hospital and four nearby schools have been placed into a precautionary lockdown as police respond to a family harm incident.

Motueka St has been closed at the intersection with Tipahi St, police said.

Photos taken by a reporter show armed police at the scene.

1News has confirmed the schools in lockdown are Nelson College, Victory Primary School, Nelson Intermediate and Hampden Street School.

In a statement to its Facebook page, Nelson Intermediate said it was in lockdown following advice by police.

"There is an incident in the community but it is contained so there is no immediate danger to any of our students. All students are safe, accounted for and in classes with staff following our school lockdown procedures."

Victory Primary School told 1News they had been in lockdown for about half an hour.

St John said in a statement it had responded to the incident with one ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and one manager.
