Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur made a big mistake with his alleged racist remark regarding team-mate Son Heung-min, but promised to give him an opportunity to atone for his error.
Bentancur has been charged by the FA for an alleged misconduct breach after a comment made on a TV show in June.
The Uruguay international had been asked by the host of the Canal 10 show for a Spurs player's shirt, to which he replied: "Sonny's? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same."
Postecoglou addressed the matter at his pre-match press conference ahead of the North London derby against Arsenal on Sunday.
"In terms of Sonny and Rodri, they had their discussions about the whole incident and both players understand and respect each others position.
"Rodri has already apologised for what he said and Sonny has accepted that. And accepted the fact that one of his team-mates and a person he is close to has made a mistake.
"If we're talking about having a society that is understanding and tolerant of everything, we must also show that to people who make mistakes as Rodri has made in this time.
"We also know him very well. A lot better than most because we spend every day with him and we understand the kind of person he is.
"We understand that even though he is a great guy and a fantastic team-mate, he has made a big error this time and he has to take the punishment, but also that we give him the opportunity to atone for it and learn from it.
"Hopefully others learn from it as well."
Spurs are set to have Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke fit for Sunday's fixture after they missed the defeat at Newcastle before the international break.
A late call will be made on Yves Bissouma after he sustained an issue while away with Mali on national team duty.
"Micky’s good, he’s trained all the way through the international break and it was good for him to stay with us to build him back up so he’s ready to go," Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou told the official club website.
"Dom’s improved as well and trained the back half of this week. We still have two days to go with those guys so hopefully they get through training OK and are available."
On Bissouma, Postecoglou revealed: "He’s got a bit of an issue, but we’ll have a look at him over the next couple of days and see how it settles."
