Fermanagh find goal groove to hammer sorry Wicklow

Three second-half goals, from Sean Cassidy and two in the space of two minutes from super sub Conor Love, sealed the deal for rampant Fermanagh over a poor Wicklow side.

The winners were never troubled and missed four goal chances as they led by 0-08 to 0-04 at the break.

A well-worked palmed goal from Cassidy made it game over by in the 43rd minute as they led by 1-11 to 0-4.

And sub Love rammed in two goals in as many minutes when brought on for Cassidy in the 55th minute to hand the home side their biggest margin of victory in many years ahead of an away tie with Carlow next weekend.

Fermanagh spurned a great goal chance when Ultan Kelm beat five Wicklow men with his sheer pace but his shot shaved the post and went wide with Calum Jones free inside after just two minutes.

Kelm got his side's opening point after a neat pass from Garvan Jones to open his team’s account and they had another good chance of a goal but Conor McShea hacked at the ball when one on one with Wicklow keeper Shane Doyle and the chance was lost.

Oisin McGraynor, the tallest man on the pitch, pointed a free for a sluggish looking Wicklow in the ninth minute.

But Erne full back Che Cullen restored the hosts' lead with a great strike with the outside of the boot.

Cassidy and the lively Fionan O’Brien made It 0-04 to 0-01 as Wicklow struggled to get to the pace of the game.

Fermanagh had two more goal chances in the 22nd and 24th minutes as McShea went close again but missed the net.

McGraynor scored a free for Wicklow, who were just a point adrift by the 17th minute.

Fermanagh had all the ball but hit six wides before O’Brien, the impressive Callum Jones and Jonny stretched their lead to 0-7 to 0-3.

Joe McDade and Eoin Darcy swapped points as Kieran Donnelly's side led by four at the interval.

Fermanagh moved up a gear after the break with McDade, Garvan Jones and Cassidy hitting three snappy points before Cassidy’s killer goal.

Love then drew a big cheer from his home crowd as he raised two green flags in as many minutes.

Kelm, sub Diarmuid King, Cassidy added more points as the rout continued in the summer sun.

Wicklow replied with a few desultory points from Darcy and McGraynor. But this was not one of their better days.

Fermanagh have recovered well from their heavy defeat to Armagh in the Ulster championship and look well placed to advance in this competition.

The Garden County will aim to bounce back against Laois next weekend.
